Bold New Programs Pave the Way for the City's Sustainability
Greetings!

This month our project with EcoWorks to help lead the creation of a climate strategy for the City of Detroit's Office of Sustainability is ramping up. The climate strategy will help the city achieve its bold emissions reductions targets and ultimately eliminate 100% of municipal emissions by 2050. NextEnergy and our project partners will be kicking off work with multiple city departments to prioritize opportunities in the upcoming weeks.

The City of Detroit’s Emergency Response to Essential Workers’ Transportation Challenges
By Hind Ourahou | Senior Mobility Strategist, Office of Mobility Innovation,
City of Detroit

The spread of COVID19 resulted in reduced bus service and capacity throughout the City of Detroit as well as many cities around the world. The Office of Mobility Innovation (OMI) needed to act fast to respond to the transportation challenge facing employees on the frontlines as well as exposed residents.

First, to ensure all residents had access to the Fairgrounds testing facility, OMI launched a transportation service that allows residents to book $2 shuttle rides at the same time of booking their test appointment at the testing site. Knowing that 25% of residents do not have access to a vehicle, this program helped hundreds, regardless of their insurance and ability to pay, get to the drive-through testing site safely.

My Summer Experience with the Girls in Engineering Academy
By Nadra Binford and Latonya Binford
I am a part of the 2018 Cohort of the Engineering Society of Detroit’s Girls in Engineering Academy (GEA), which means I started the summer before I entered sixth grade. This summer, my classes were English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Chemistry and Electrical Engineering. In ELA we focused on grammar and presentations. ELA was great because our instructor had fun slideshows and videos and allowed us to express a positive and negative thought each day.
