Participant Highlight: Jack Bunis
Jack participates in the Joslyn Center Art Group that meets Friday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Tell us a bit about yourself?
Jack: I just turned 90. I was born in Manhattan and lived in New Jersey with my wife and three children. We moved to Glendora when I was working for IBM. While at IBM I was part of the team that built the computer to help Chuck Yeager break the sound barrier. My job and love of travel has taken me all over the world. Some of my favorite places to visit have been Venice, Paris, and London. My wife and I have taken 18 different cruises to various places around the world. Before my wife got ill, we dreamed of taking the yearlong cruise around the world.

|
When did you start coming to the Joslyn Center and what brought you here?
Jack: I started coming to the Joslyn Center about a year ago; my daughter helped me find a place where I could paint with others.
How and when did you start painting?

Jack: I started painting seven years ago. My father-in-law was a painter, and we had several of his pieces in our home. Due to the climate being different here than where he lived, the paint began to flake off. I found a person to restore them, and he encouraged me to stay and watch the process. I agreed to do so if I could help reframe them as I like to work with wood. After a while he asked if I would try and restore a painting myself, assuring me that he could fix it if I made a mistake. That experience is what helped me learn to draw and paint.

|
What is your inspiration for your art pieces?

Jack: I like to draw and paint the pictures that I took during our travels. I also build my own canvases and frames for my work. I like to be a part of every step of the process.
