Participant Highlight: Greg Sheldon

Jack is a member of the Joslyn Center Art Group that meets Friday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

Greg: I moved to Claremont from Los Angeles when I was in the 6th grade. When I was about 11 or 12 years old, I went to Condit Elementary school, followed by El Roble Intermediate and Claremont High. I went to college and got married in 1969. I owned a custom sandal shop on 1st Street in the village called "The Village Idiot". I would make custom sandals to match your feet, leather watch bands and other leather goods. When I closed my shop, I became a house painter and really enjoyed doing that because it still helped me feel like I was making art. My wife worked at Pomona College as a secretary. We have two children: a daughter who is a middle school principal in the Bay Area, and a son who is currently studying to be an RN. Both kids turned out great.

What brought you to the Joslyn Center?

Greg: I started coming here about a year ago to paint with others as I have a cedar shed in my back yard that I paint larger pieces in, and I come here to use other mediums and make post cards.

How do you come up with the ideas for your pieces?

Greg: I can’t just paint if given an idea. If you were to ask me to paint a bear, I wouldn’t know where to start. I need a picture to give me an idea of how to create it.

Do you have any hobbies other than painting?

Greg: I love to fish. I had a cabin in Big Bear that I liked to stay at, and I fished at the lake.
