Senior Program Updates
cauldron_of_gold.jpg
Here are just a few updates regarding our program and the City:

  • Happy Spring Equinox, Women's History Month, and St. Patrick's Day! If you are interested in making something green at home in honor of the Irish holiday, lunch participant John Serpa shared with us a tasty-sounding pea soup recipe that you can make during these final cold days. Also, here is another themed activity page that one of our staff members created.

  • The Joslyn and Blaisdell Centers continue to be closed until further notice due to safety concerns over COVID-19. However, staff are still available at the Joslyn Center to answer questions Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. by calling (909) 399-5488 or emailing joslyncenter@ci.claremont.ca.us.

  • The Claremont Senior Program provides boxed lunches to-go for adults 60+ on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. in front of the Joslyn Center. The drive-through meal distribution is first-come, first-served, while supplies last. Any LA County resident 60+ is welcome to utilize this service, but it is highly encouraged that a proxy (someone under the age of 65 in good health) is sent to pick up meals for seniors so that they can stay safely in their homes.

  • For City-wide updates on COVID-19 cases, businesses reopening, health order highlights, and more, visit the City's informational COVID-19 page here and see our vaccination updates below and in upcoming "Clicks" newsletters.

  • For classes and activities that you can participate in safely from home, check out the Hughes Center's latest offerings in their Virtual Activity Center, below:
Senior Spotlight: Barbara Mowbray
Barbara Mowbray is a retired RN who worked in the field for 45 years (31 of them spent working at City of Hope). Although retired, her passion to help others has not slowed down. Before the pandemic, Barbara could be seen each year at our flu shot clinic administering vaccines, and this year is no different--except that she is now volunteering to give the vaccine for COVID-19 to LA County residents at the Fairplex. Being mindful about the safety of herself and others, Barbara was diligent about getting vaccinated herself prior to volunteering. She says the worst of the post-vaccine side effects was a headache, which only lasted for a few hours, and the best side effect was the feeling of relief to have gotten the vaccine. She still follows the research and news regarding the coronavirus, hoping that, one day, it will be safe to travel again so she could be with her loved ones on the East coast (she's a Boston native, as you can tell from her charming accent) and to dine at a restaurant (she's tired of cooking!). For now, Barbara’s saving grace during this time is enjoying a good cup of coffee every morning, walking every day, and attending Zoom sessions for St. Ambrose's church service, the VNA grief support group, and a book club. She has always enjoyed volunteering at the Joslyn and Hughes Centers and misses being around folks who frequent them. If others feel the same way, her advice is to get vaccinated as soon as possible and to continue wearing masks.
AARP Tax Aide - Limited Services this Year
As mentioned in our previous update, free tax preparation assistance through AARP will be limited this year as the volunteers operate at reduced capacity. While our Claremont volunteers and those of some cities will be preparing taxes 100% remotely, other local sites will have preparers helping in-person with safety protocols in place or remotely via a document drop-off. If you are interested in utilizing AARP Tax Aide's help this year, you can request an appointment by filling out the form at the link below. An AARP representative will be in touch with you within a few days after submission, according to the site. We advise that anyone filling out the form specify their needs or limitations in the "Do you have any special requirements?" field, knowing the three potential ways that appointments are being carried out.
Since appointments with tax preparers will be limited this year, AARP has shared other alternatives to filing.

  • If you are computer-savvy, you can prepare taxes yourself with the virtual guidance of a tax preparer. This would involve screen-sharing on a video chat platform (like Zoom) and scanning your tax documents into an electronic form. Visit the following link to learn more: https://aarpfoundationtaxaideatp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
  • File your taxes online using free self-file software. There are two options (TurboTax and OnLine Taxes) that are partnered with the IRS to provide free tax prep services to those who qualify. Visit the following link to see the qualifications for both: https://taxaide.aarpfoundation.org/online-self-filing-software

Thank You, Valentines Day Sponsors!
Thanks to the generosity of community sponsors and volunteers, the older adults who participate in the Senior Emergency Meal Program received lots of love this past month in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Seniors were treated to festive, custom-made potted air plants and magnets created by Heart of Stone Designs, thanks to a sponsorship from Inter Valley Health Plan. Participants also received hand-made Valentine’s Day cards and candy courtesy of students from Claremont High School’s National Honor Society, Webb School’s Interact Club, and Claremont Colleges’ Gerontology Association. To top it all off, older adults were able to drive through a “tunnel of love” while picking up their meal kits and Valentine’s Day goodies, thanks to a sponsorship from Comfort Keepers.

Now that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, let’s work on a plan to get ourselves back to our most thriving selves! Attend this workshop presented by Tri City Mental Health to discuss the challenges you are facing, the impact of stress on your wellness, and learn how to develop a wellness toolbox to help yourself and others. Attendees will be entered into a raffle for a $10 Stater Bros. gift card from the Senior Program! Join us on Thursday, March 18 from 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. on Zoom. Pre-registration is required. Video chat or call in via telephone to participate.

Hope Partners' Food Pantry - How You Can Help
Did you know that a food pantry operates out of the Joslyn Center Annex each week for those with low or no income? This program is operated by Inland Valley Hope Partners, a non-profit organization that is always accepting donations. More families than ever rely on access to free, nutritious food items due to the ongoing pandemic, as evidenced by the fact that this site now operates an additional day per week. If you are interested in donating non-perishable, unexpired, and unopened/undamaged grocery items, please drop off donations at the Joslyn Center Annex (the south-most building at our site) during the following days and times: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:30 p.m.-4:00 p.m.; Fridays, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. If you would like to make a monetary donation to the organization, please click the button below.
