INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT: SCOTT FOSTER of Parkinson's Explorers
|
|
We recernly spoke with Scott Foster, one of the facilitators of the Parkinson's Explorers group, which will return to in-person meetings (in a new location) starting May 14! Find out how to participate following our interview with Scott.
How did the Parkinson's Explorers group begin at the Joslyn Center?
In the early 1990's, my mom called a family meeting to announce that she was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. This disease was completely foreign to my family at the time, and there weren't any local support groups around to help us understand what my mother was going through. So, being the self-starter, motivated, and outgoing person she was, my mother, Barbara Foster, started her own!
How did you become involved, yourself, with the group?
When my mom wasn't able to host meetings anymore due to declining health around 2007, my dad, Bill Foster, took over. When she passed in 2009, I began helping my dad with facilitating meetings, driving all the way from Apple Valley. That same year, my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer and never seemed to fully bounce back. I reassured my father that I would continue the Parkinson's Explorers meetings in his absence because I saw how important the group was to the community. Once my father passed at the end of 2009, a volunteer named Debbie Lanier showed me the ropes of how to facilitate the group, and I've been doing it ever since.
How did your fellow facilitator, Roy Trujillo, become involved?
Roy was involved in a Parkinson's support group that took place at the Claremont Club, and he decided to join forces with me in 2015.
What can new attendees expect at Parkinson's Explorers meetings?
These monthly meetings are typically made up of Parkies (an endearing team for those who have a Parkinson's Disease diagnosis) and/or their caregivers, and are meant to be a mixture of an informal, social gathering, and an opportunity to learn from knowledgeable speakers giving presentations on the subject. To me, the definition of a support group is a place you go to know that you're not alone. With Parkinson's Explorers, the goal is to empower yourself with knowledge about your disease and to build community.
Parkinson's Explorers will resume their monthly meetings on Saturday, May 14 at the Alexander Hughes Community Center (1700 Danbury Rd.). This group meets on the second Saturday of each month from 10:00 a.m. until noon. For questions, call the Joslyn Center at (909) 399-5488.
