HEA-R Ye, HEA-R Ye!
In December, Audio-Reader kicks off its annual Help Expand Audio-Reader (HEA-R) campaign. This year we are incredibly excited and humbled to announce that we have a generous donor who is providing a match, dollar-for-dollar, for the first $5,000 we raise for this campaign! With this match, YOUR gift now has twice the impact. This year, we ask that you consider Audio-Reader in your year-end giving. Please know that your gift will go a long way in supporting Audio-Reader listeners and setting a solid foundation for our future. Gifts can be mailed to Audio-Reader at 1120 W 11th St, Lawrence, KS 66044 or made online  donate here  Together we will work together to make Audio-Reader not only self-sufficient, but a thriving service for the thousands of listeners who depend on us each and every day.

For Your EARS Only 2018: Another 'Record' Event!
Audio-Reader's 16th benefit sale, For Your EARS Only, that took place September 14 & 15 was our most successful to date! This year's event grossed over $42,000! This is a big event that requires so much help from all of our volunteers. Thank you to everyone for your support, your time, your physical labor (!) and most importantly, your dedication to making this a successful fundraiser for Audio-Reader year after year.
New Staff - Welcome!

Audio-Reader's New Coordinator of Volunteers

My family and I live in Tonganoxie.  We moved here about seven years ago from my home state of New Hampshire.  We have three children, one girl and two boys, ages eleven, nine and seven (they all say "sucker" instead of "lollipop" and "pop" instead of "soda", and it makes my heart hurt, every time!). I love to read, travel and listen to music. We traveled to Iceland as a family in March.

I went to Syracuse University for my undergraduate degree and I have Masters degrees in Social Work and Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. My career has been in the nonprofit world, in a variety of service-oriented organizations.

I cannot wait to meet the wonderful Audio-Reader volunteers I have heard so much about, and start contributing to the amazing work you do!

Q and A with new Weekend Coordinator, Corbin Allenbrand

Several of my most favored topics include mathematics, philosophy, government/politics, cosmology, planetary/climate sciences and physics.

Meet A Listener: Charles Cosper
by Kim Morrow, A-R Listener and Development Committee Member

Holt, Missouri resident Charles Cosper has had diabetes since the age of 23 and felt that he had the disease, and the rest of his life, completely under control. At age 50, he had a good job as a large farm manager and livestock herdsman. "I was good at it. I grew up in Union Star, Missouri, and graduated from the School of the Ozarks. I was an agriculture major, and in order to pay my tuition, I worked the school's farms. I learned animals from the inside out. When I graduated, I had some experience and I just kept on going from there."

Life changed for Charles in an instant. Ten years ago, an accident, complicated by his diabetes, damaged his retinas. Surgery was required and he knew that his level of sight might change, but he never expected to emerge from surgery totally blind.

"When I went blind, I didn't know how to do anything. I'd never known anyone who was blind, so I didn't know what blind people were capable of doing or how people who are blind make their way in the world."

Charles soon became a member of the National Federation of the Blind, where he began forming friendships with other people who were blind who mentored and inspired him. "One of my friends in the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) told me about Audio-Reader. Then I met someone from my local Lions Club who told me that Lions sponsor some of Audio-Reader's programming. I couldn't wait to get a radio of my own."

One of Charles' favorite hobbies is shopping online. "The grocery ads, WalMart ads and Shopping the Discount Stores are a big part of my week," Charles says. "I appreciate knowing what's on sale." Another big part of Charles's day is reading his local newspaper on Telephone Reader. "It's really nice to know what's going on in my hometown."

His favorite volunteer reader is Donna Decedue . And Charles has a message for all of Audio-Reader's volunteers and staff. "I want you to know that there are people listening who count on you every single day. I appreciate what you do. I don't know where I'd be without Audio-Reader."

Become a Sustaining Donor of Audio-Reader

Audio-Reader is actively working to increase its Sustainer program. With a committed dollar amount each month, we can increase our guaranteed support. To put the impact of the sustainer program into perspective, if every one of our 450 volunteers committed to just $10 per month that would come to $54,000 each year. That is a significant amount for Audio-Reader! We would like to ask you to consider committing to Audio-Reader through our Sustainer program, if you haven't already done so. This is an easy way to stretch your impact and it ensures a strong future for Audio-Reader! Please contact Meredith Johanning at [email protected] to complete the steps to become a Sustaining Donor.
