What is Our Part?

A letter to you from Sarahjoy Marsh, Breitenbush Alum and Founder/Executive Director of DAYA Foundation.

Dear {first name},

There are many ways to love and heal this Earth.

  • There are climate scientists doing predictive modeling so we can know what carbon neutral targets to set
  • We have landscape designers who are planting species to meet the needs of a climate and populace 20 years in the future, already envisioning how the landscape will be altered
  • Software engineers are building the systems that will support hundreds of mission-driven companies who just might save the planet

Each of these interconnected industries will have numerous support people, accountants, HR professionals, sales people, supply chain managers and others, all digging in and doing their part in webs of ecosystems we may never know about.

There is a role to play for each one of us here on this planet right now. Roles on frontlines, or in the vast matrix of support systems for education or change. Each role is incredibly precious and wildly necessary. YOURS included!

Yet, in order to act, to be brave and bold, to be expedient and intelligent, to speak up and out, to do our part, we need to be continually restoring our personal sanity so that our service is not extinguished by the toil or angst we will encounter with the forces opposing the systemic changes that are so desperately needed.

Breitenbush encompasses these two worlds.

Providing restorative sanctuary. And taking action.

We’ve done this for decades.

Forty years ago, while providing a place of renewal and sanctuary for our guests, Breitenbush joined the struggle against indiscriminate and predatory logging—driven by the politics of our system of government and profit-driven economics—to spare the forest on which all life depends.

Today, we are engaging in conversation about creating programs that increase climate education, forest stewardship, and programming focused on indigenous practices and teachings about the land on which we live and serve. We are honored to host you when you visit.

We’ve established a collaborative relationship with Pacific NW organizations to increase access to Breitenbush for BIPOC communities. We’re actively engaged in the housing and homelessness crisis left by the wildfires of 2020.

And, we are here to hold you when being in this world has left you weary. We are here to wrap you in warmth and love, fill your belly with hearty organic food, stoke your awe and wonder with the beauty of these mountains, and then send you back to the world with a heart full of fire.

This is our place in the web, to hold the sanctuary for the people who visit us each year. We are here because we believe our offering is desperately needed in this often disconnected, unjust, and conflicted world.

We want to keep being here for you, especially in these turbulent times. And, right now we are on shaky ground and need your help. If you believe in what we do, if this sanctuary has held you, renewed you, transformed you, you already know the value of your visit was more than the cost of your stay. It went beyond your time here. To keep providing these potent opportunities for you and the greater community, we need to rebuild from Covid and the wildfires. This is why we are fundraising.

Please consider joining us as a monthly donor. It’s our best community “crowd-funding” opportunity. Your monthly donations help us to meet our monthly and quarterly fundraising goals, and position us to seek grants from larger foundations. These donations are also being matched by our Matching Fund Investors, so every monthly donation you make is being doubled!
