The Latest Issue of WOW Review is Out!
The books in Volume XIII, Issue 4 of WOW Review look at change, be it environmental, circumstantial, or personal. While change is often difficult, it creates tension that precipitates growth and creates opportunities for new, unexpected directions. The reviews in this issue focus on people and places undergoing external and internal change, offering characters new insights and direction.
This free, peer-reviewed, electronic journal publishes critical reviews on children's and adolescent literature that highlight intercultural understanding and global perspectives and is available to read online or to download as a PDF. More info here.

Dr. Jenny Lee Publishes Findings with the Committee of 100
The Committee of 100 just released an important report by Jenny Lee, Professor in our college’s Center for the Study of Higher Education and our Dean’s Fellow for Internationalization. Her study revealed a pattern of racial profiling and consequences for US innovation.

Cooper Center Teacher Appreciation Event
Cooper Center is so lucky to be a part of the College of Education, and we can't thank you enough for all the ways that you support our work. I want to personally invite you to join us from 4pm to 7pm on Saturday, November 20th for our annual Teacher Appreciation & Donor Recognition event. The evening will feature live music, amazing food from San Xavier Co-op Farm, storytelling, stargazing, and more! We're also honoring 100 teachers with special thank you gifts, valued at more than $100 apiece. It's going to be a great night around the campfire and under the stars. Family and friends are invited too, of course.

Supporting Transgender Students in Your Classroom: A Panel hosted by TREC
TREC works to leverage the resources in the region to support the region’s educators and also fill in gaps as needed. Teachers in the region have identified supporting transgender students as a gap in the region and have asked for more support around this area. TREC is bringing together a panel of experts and educators to share their experiences and best practices for supporting transgender students. This panel will not fill in the gap but will be a starting point for educators in supporting their transgender students. All attendees will receive a handout that includes key resources for supporting transgender students.

Project Outreach FAMILIA Hosted First Family Summit
The University of Arizona’s Project Outreach FAMILIA held their first Family Summit on topic of the college-going process on Saturday, September 25, 2021. Notable were the various collaborating partners who made it possible to offer an experience for the entire family. Shared leadership involved in the planning was the school district of our partnering high schools, specifically Mexican American Student Services at Tucson Unified School District. University partners were the Guerrero Student Center and the Office of Early Academic Outreach. Leveraging resources and functioning collaboratively with a shared mission resulted in a vibrant event with 157 participants.

AWARDSS Receives Renewal
The Access, Wellness, and Relational Determinants of Student Success (AWARDSS) team is pleased to announce the program has received a competitive renewal. The program is embedded in the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Consortium hosted by the Graduate College. Current AWARDSS leadership includes Michelle Perfect, PhD (Principal Investigator). College of Education, Brandy Perkl, PhD (Co-PI) from the College of Applied Science and Technology, and Sara Chavarria (Co-I) College of Education. The AWARDSS program here at University of Arizona is sponsored and funded by the U.S. Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences (IES).

As part of out trans-border education initiatives, we co-hosted the Dia de Los Muertos Tapestry Project to create a beautiful celebratory tapestry on the University mall. The event was cosponsored by the President's Office, the Mexican Consulate, and HSI. The two artists from Mexico are Alex Lira and Laura Miranda. Both are from Huamantla, Tlaxcala, Mexico, and members of the Alfombristas Mexicanos organization. Thank you to all who joined us for this important cultural event!

Dr. Carol Brochin, Associate Professor in TLS
Dr. Brochin was recently invited to speak at the 4th Annual "Queering our Classrooms" event, designed to expand capacity to support LGBTQ+ students and educators in El Paso EC-20 education. She also presented "Salas de Libros LGBTQ+" for the EL3 Lab coloquio with graduate students where they had a more in-depth conversation. Highlights from the event can be watched here. |

Doctoral Candidate Sarah Albrecht
TLS doctoral candidate Sarah Albrecht was awarded an ACTFL research grant. Albrecht's project will focus on pedagogical translation for reading comprehension in mixed HL-L2 secondary classroom.
