“Made One: A Series on Reconciliation with Christ.”
Atonement, Redemption, Reconciliation, Salvation – These are all biblical words that are getting at the same idea: God’s action to make things right between Him and us, and all of creation.
Redemption is a word and concept that can help us have a deeper understanding of what God has done for us. Redemption means the act of gaining or regaining possession of something in exchange for payment. It can also mean the clearing of a debt. In the Bible it generally means that someone has lost something through injustice, debt, or death, and someone else has stepped in to buy the lost property back and restore it to its rightful owner. Sometimes the “something” lost was a person – such as when someone was sold into slavery. To be sold into slavery was to be taken from your family, home, land, and sometimes clan or nation. For a slave to be redeemed, or purchased back, was to be restored to their family, home, land and nation. It was not only freedom from slavery but also a homecoming.
In Luke 1:68 Zechariah joyfully proclaims, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people and redeemed them.” Zechariah is not only pronouncing freedom from sin, but also a homecoming – we come home to God and have a place in His house, where we belong. To be redeemed is to be restored to our rightful place, it is clearing all debt along the way, and it is a joyful homecoming which is why all the angels rejoice over one sinner who repents.
