THE COMET'S TALE
April 10, 2020
IMPORTANT!
Please call (405) 947-6274 as soon as possible if your phone number or mailing address has changed. We're contacting students about enrollment for next year, and it's imperative that we have current information for each student.
Online Instruction and
Returning School Property
ASTEC teachers will deliver instruction, assignments and schedule time with students in Google Classroom.  Scholars must log into Google Classroom for each class every school day to keep up with learning. Students are to stay home (shelter in place) and should not report to the school building for any reason.
Assignments
Instruction and assignments will be delivered through Google Classroom. Scholars should log in each morning to get your assignments. Assignments are due by 11:59 p.m. daily.

If a scholar is unable to log in during an assigned class time, he or she is still responsible for the content covered in that class period.

Getting Help From Teachers
Each afternoon from 12:30 to 2 p.m., teachers will be available to scholars for help through Google Hangouts. Your teacher will provide instructions through Google Classroom.

Teachers are also available through email  to answer questions and help with technology concerns throughout the day.

 Video Conferencing
Some teachers may choose to have a class by video conferencing through Google Hangouts on occasion.  If a teacher chooses to do that, you will be notified through Google Classroom and given instructions and proper etiquette.
Video conferencing will occur at the following times should a teacher schedule one:
First Period: 8:30 to 9 a.m.
Second Period: 9 to 9:30 a.m.
Third Period: 9:30 to 10 a.m.
Fourth Period: 10 to 10:30 a.m.
Fifth Period: 10:30 to 11 a.m.
Sixth Period: 11:00  to 11:30 a.m.
Seventh Period: 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Office Hours for Individual Help: 12:30 to 2 p.m.

Attendance and Grading
Teachers will record attendance each day based on the scholar: 1. Logging into Google Classroom and 2. Satisfactorily completing assignments in the course.

This gives students who need to improve their grades and opportunity to do that.
Teachers will take a minimum of 3 grades per week to help improve a scholar’s grade.
ASTEC expects all scholars to do their best to meet the learning expectations of all classes.

Behavior
Scholars must follow the Technology Use Agreement at all times. Scholars must be respectful in their interactions with teachers and other scholars while participating in Google Hangouts, and in their emails.  In summary, ASTEC’s Code of Conduct remains in place as we engage in distance learning. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in disciplinary action up to and including suspension.
Returning School Property
Scholars are responsible for returning all items that were checked out to them this school year.  This includes, but is not limited to Chromebooks, textbooks, sports uniforms, etc. ASTEC will inform you of that process at a later date. Check-in will be done in the safest manner possible and will follow the guidelines from the Center for Disease Control and any directives from local, state, or national government.

Failure to return school property will result in involving the local authorities.
Devices for Online Learning
ASTEC scholars must have a laptop, Chromebook or tablet and Wi-Fi in order to complete this school year online beginning April 6th. Cell phones are not an acceptable device for online learning.

ASTEC administered a student survey before Spring Break to see which students were in need of a device for online learning. ASTEC staff have been calling the families of these scholars and scheduling times for parents to come, one parent or guardian at-a-time, to check out Chromebooks.

If there are scholars who did not complete the survey accurately and do not have a device at home, parents need to call the school right away at (405) 947-6274 and make arrangements to pick up a Chromebook. Parents are responsible for the Chromebooks being returned in the same condition.

All Chromebooks are picked up at the high school office. Only one parent at a time may enter. If you have traveled out of state within the past 2-week, please call the high school and let the secretary know before you come.

Parents may have their temperatures taken before entering the school to pick up the Chromebook and sign the agreement. Chromebooks have been cleaned and sanitized. Staff wear personal protective equipment and are constantly wiping down surfaces to protect themselves and our visitors during this critical time.

Please frequently check the ASTEC website for updated information for parents and scholars.

Congratulations Ms. Deal!
ASTEC Biology Teacher, Ms. Kelsey Deal, was selected as an Outstanding Educator, and will be recognized March 27 during a ceremony at the Oklahoma School for Science and Math.  Ms. Deal was nominated by a former student for this prestigious honor, because of the impact she had on that student’s love of science. Congratulations Ms. Deal!

Middle School Choir Excellence!
The Middle School Choir attended the district music contest in March, where they received EXCELLENT ratings on their prepared pieces. The scholars had a great time, and the Singing Comets represented ASTEC well!
