For the safety of all, there will be no in-person worship this weekend. If you're able, we invite you to worship virtually! Check your inbox for an email this Saturday with a pre-recorded worship service, or stream it Sunday at 11:00am on facebook or at hbumc.org/live. Please visit hbumc.org to keep up with any further weather-related updates.

"But Lot’s wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt" (Genesis 19:26). This week we'll continue in our sermon series #fail: When Grace Meets Our Worst Moments. What happens when we're tempted to look back, instead of trusting that God is summoning us forward? How might God be calling us to step into a better future? Join us virtually as together we discover how grace shows up after the mistake, inside the regret, and beyond the moment that feels defining.

Join us this Wednesday, January 28! Dinner will be a choice of fried or grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, collard greens, salad, rolls and dessert. An alternative kid’s meal of chicken nuggets with mac & cheese will be provided upon request.

Dinner will be served from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., followed by programming for all ages from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Register here for dinner by Monday evening.

When I was 22, a church member said something that changed my life. He said, “Have you ever thought about being a Stephen Minister?”

Before I was ever a pastor, I was a Stephen Minister—a regular congregation member like you, someone who just wants to journey with people through difficult seasons in their life. My first care receiver was a woman who had outlived all her relatives and friends. She had never married nor had children and had just gone through the loss of someone for whom she’d been a caregiver. She was lonely. I had the privilege of sitting with this woman, learning from someone whose first vote cast was for Franklin Roosevelt. She was living history, she was a care receiver, and she was a friend. I treasured our shared lunches and deep conversations.

When I got married, I gave her a corsage and seated her in a place of honor.

My care receiver passed away just shy of her 101st birthday. I keep her picture in my office to remind me of the sweetness of our Stephen Ministry relationship. Now it’s my turn to say something that might change your life: Have you ever thought about being a Stephen Minister? Email me at sswandell@hbumc.org. Let’s talk.

You’re invited to join the pastors for conversation and coffee in the Parlor on Sunday, January 25 at 10 a.m. Whether you’re new, or a longtime member looking to catch up with the pastors, you are welcome! RSVP to sswandell@hbumc.org. Childcare available.

The next elementary movie night will be on February 6 from 5:30-7:30pm for all Kindergarten – 5th Grade kids. Please note: 4s and Transitional Kindergarten are now considered part of Preschool @ HBUMC and Movie Night is reserved for Elementary students. Join us for a fun-filled evening with friends, food, and a movie as we watch: The Secret Life of Pets. Come ready to relax, laugh, and enjoy some Chick-fil-A with your friends. I Stop

Breathe,

Listen,

Align this soul with Love.

Beneath the whirl of what is,

is a deep, down quiet place,

A place of still water.

There I wait.
