Birthday Bags
cakeOutreach Project for the WHOLE CHURCH (all ages!)

Memories of our childhood birthdays are for most of us both treasured and potent. Perhaps it was the year you turned six, and your grandmother gave you a treasured copy of A.A. Milne, or when you were nine, and your dad took you and your friends on a fishing expedition. Maybe it is the simple joy of remembering a special meal your mother prepared only on your birthday. Certainly, there was bound to be cake.

Now imagine what it would be like if your family couldn't celebrate your
special day. Worse, imagine what it must feel like to not have the means to provide so much as a birthday cake for your child. The children of Glazer Elementary don't have to imagine such a thing. For many of them, that's just the way life is. We're going to change that.  Led by our children, Christ Church Cranbrook will be providing special Birthday Bags for each child at Glazer. This new outreach program will ensure that every child is celebrated and honored on his or her special day.

To kick things off in the proper spirit, we'll be assembling the first 100 of these bags as part of this year's Ice Cream Social on May 19. Families will be asked to help put together the cake mix, frosting, and special little treats in individual "Birthday Bags" for the Glazer kids. We're asking you to contribute the necessary ingredients - lists will be distributed on May 5 and May 12 - and we'll need to have all donations by Sunday, May 19.

This Week's Intercessions
Read the Bible in One Year
Sunday's at 9:00 AM in the Guild Hall

This Sunday, May 5 - Acts (also known as the Acts of the Apostles, Part 2 to the Gospel
according to Luke) about what brought disciples of the new Way to be a Christian
community. We'll discuss Paul's dramatic conversion, Peter's bizarre dream, and Cornelius' sbaptism all of which question what it means to be insiders and outsiders. Read Chapters 9 and 10.

Next Sunday, May 12 - Galatians is one of many letters or Epistles written by (or attributed to) the Apostle Paul. This extraordinary man, first a persecutor of Christians, and later one of the chief evangelists, has a great deal to say about what it means to be a Christian community. Please read Chapters 1, 3, and 5.

For those who haven't yet participated in the Bible in One Year, it's never to late to join us. Please come! And to catch up on past conversations, listen to podcasts on CCC's website: http://christchurchcranbrook.org/site/2012/read-the-bible-in-one-year-2/ (scroll to the bottom of the page)
Bishop's Visitation
The Rt. Rev. Wendell N. Gibbs, Jr., Bishop of Michigan, will be at Christ Church Cranbrook for an official Visitation this Sunday, May 5 at the 10:00 AM service.  We invite those who usually attend the 5:00 PM Saturday and the 8:00 AM Sunday services to attend the 10:00 AM service. (Those services will be held as usual for those who are unable to attend the 10:00 AM service.) During the service, Bishop Gibbs will recognize our senior acolytes and present them with crosses. Immediately following worship, Bishop Gibbs will bless our new Event Tent that covers the Patio!  After a festive Coffee Hour in our newly blessed tent, Bishop Gibbs will have lunch with the Vestry and Clergy at the Rectory.
Ministry Fair

Finvarra's Wren is one of North America's most exciting Irish quartets. "Making the kind of music you'd only hear on the west coast of Ireland,"  this Detroit, Michigan based band has an intense dedication to their instruments and to Irish music. As a family based group, Finvarra's Wren is capable of playing with a tightness and effortlessness that often evades other ensembles. Their performances have been described as "a swirl of musical tradition and performance energy." Finvarra's Wren has performed at many of North America's top music festivals and venues including the Kennedy Center, the Goderich Celtic Festival, BlissFest, Celtic Fest Mississippi and Ann Arbor's prestigious Ark.

Rite 13 Ceremony
Last Sunday, April 28, 12 of our young people participated in a very special rite of passage called Rite 13 - the celebration of Manhood and Womanhood. Congratulations to these committed young people and their families.
Spring UTO Offering
The United Thank Offering (UTO) is a way we can express our thanks to God for our everyday blessings.  Your money and prayers have built churches, fed the hungry, clothed the poor and provided shelter for the homeless, as well as provided care and support for those with physical, mental and emotional disabilities.  Say, "Thank you God,"  by placing a Blue UTO envelope in the collection plate. Make checks payable to Christ Church  Cranbrook , memo "UTO."  This will be collected on Saturday, May 11th and Sunday, May 12th.
Outreach Event
The young people of Christ Church Cranbrook are sponsoring an outreach project for the children of Glazer Elementary.  We will be creating Birthday Bags filled with cake mix, frosting, birthday napkins and plates and more.  When each Glazer student has a birthday, the birthday boy or girl will be presented with a birthday bag.  This will enable families of the children to make a cake or cupcakes, at home, and have a celebration.  All the family will need to provide is an egg or two.  Our young people invite the whole congregation to join them in assembling the birthday bags on Sunday, May 19th after the 10 AM service.  We will distribute lists of items needed for the bags on May 5th and May 12th. Please plan to join us in preparing fun and festivity for the children at Glazier Elementary.
Inquirers Classes (New!)
Confirmation is a pastoral rite in the Episcopal Church; therefore it is not a rite that notes fuller initiation into the Church, the Body of Christ.  A person is a full member of the Church through Baptism.  Confirmation is a "mature public affirmation of faith and commitment to the responsibilities of Baptism" BCP (p. 860).  Read more.

If you have any questions or would like to participate in the classes please contact The Rev. Joyce Matthews at 248.644.5210, Ext. 15 or email jmatthews@christchurchcranbrook.org.
May Food Collection
Collecting canned FRUIT in May!!!  Christ Church Cranbrook will collect a targeted specific food item each month for Focus:HOPE which distributes food to 42,000 mothers, children and senior citizens monthly.  All sizes, brands, and kinds of fruit are welcome.  Place your food item/s in the baskets at the front of the church (the narthex) before or after the service, or as you come forward for communion.  On the last Sunday of the month, a priest will bless it before we send it off to hungry families.

BREAD OF LIFE

Family Pizza Night: Thurs. June 27 6:00-8:00 PM

General Information

It is time once again for the best week of the year! This year your children will learn something new each day about God's love for them. We will explore one Bible story about "Bread" each day and apply that story at each of the following stations: Bible Story, Games, Snacks, Drama and Crafts. We begin and end each day at camp in a large group format led by Father Jim Hamilton. Children are grouped in crews of +5 children with one or two leader(s). VBS includes: camp, t-shirt, snacks, crafts and music CD. We want to make VBS accessible to all, therefore VBS is free of charge. Donations to help offset the cost of the program would be greatly appreciated

Afternoon Day Camp (ADC)

ADC is a wonderful opportunity to extend the fun at camp into the afternoon. Each day includes a nutritious lunch, a snack, crafts and walking day trips to various pre-planned excursions including the Cranbrook Science Institute, Natatorium and Gardens. Available Monday - Friday, from noon - 5:30PM for children that have completed kindergarten through sixth grade. You may select to participate in one or more days at ADC. $40 per day.

Healing Ministry
If you are curious or have an interest in learning more about Healing, please join us for five consecutive Thursday nights (May 16 - June 13th) from 7-9 PM in rooms 201/202.  We'll explore Agnes Sanford's inspirational work, "The Healing Light," as well as learn different ways to pray and meditate.  Please contact Joyce Matthews (jmatthews@christchurchcranbrook.org) or Kristin Bowen (kristinbowen@comcast.net) for more information.
Glazer Elementary Opportunities
We have two fantastic (and immediate!) opportunities for hands-on support for Glazer Elementary. Are you the bookish type? We're looking for those who might be interested in re-organizing the library.  Prefer to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty? There are 3 gardens that need a little love and attention. This is a great project for a small group, so recruit your pals! We'll be meeting at Glazer next Thursday, May 9 at 11:30 AM to sort out the logistics for both. For more information, please contact Amanda Moore: aamoore922@comcast.net or call 248.258.8935.
