Community Grants and Task Force Recommendations
|
|
The news in early February that the two new grant making policies and the focus area pilot program were approved by our membership probably caused some of you to wonder whether the Community Grant Committee will be able to swing into action and implement these changes for the 2023 grant cycle on such short notice.
Yes, it’s true that we kicked off our grant cycle on February 13, just 10 days after the ballots on the grant making policy modifications were counted. But the Community Grants co-chairs had started preparing for the 2023 cycle months earlier knowing full-well that changes likely were afoot. Since then, the full committee has been engaged in planning.
This year, as part of the pilot program, Community Grants will be awarded in three of the Focus Areas: Arts and Culture, Education, and Environment/Parks/Sustainability/Recreation. Within the pilot program lives the goal to award grants of significantly larger dollar amounts—the ability of which is based on the amount of money allocated by leadership to Community Grants.
The shift from rewarding “projects” to supporting the overall work of a nonprofit through core mission support makes so much sense. Without strong operational funding, the nonprofits aren’t able to provide their services. As we shift to providing this type of support, nominating members are encouraged to assist the nonprofits in developing their application in a way that describes what receiving a grant now would mean to the organization.
The need for change rests with us all—the Community Grants committee—and our membership. We’ll focus on presenting the nonprofits in a clear and compelling way, and together through the votes our membership cast, we’ll shift our love of the project to love of the organizations and their good works.
Working to make the changes necessary to implement the recommendations, we know we’re not alone. We’ve been collaborating with the Impact Grant co-chairs—sharing ideas and looking at ways to align and streamline our processes—and there’s the ongoing commitment of support from the Grantmaking Task Force and the Leadership Team. We’re excited about the impact the recommendations will have on Impact 100 Redwood Circle and the nonprofits we serve.

LIAISON: 2022 Community Grantee
Becoming Independent Music Academy
|
|
Becoming Independent’s core mission is to help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities live productive and meaningful lives. This 2022 Community Grantee utilized its Impact 100 Redwood Circle grant to purchase musical instruments for their Music Academy. Below they share their story of how the grant supported their mission.
American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said, "Music is the universal language of mankind." The student musicians in Becoming Independent’s Music Academy heartily agree.
In 2021, George - a Becoming Independent instructor and a musician - brought a few of his instruments to work and engaged the clients in a music class. Excitement for this class grew at a level that was described as “through the roof.” This class, soon dubbed the Music Academy, was limited only by the number of instruments available; BI's Music Academy needed more equipment. Music is wonderful, and it really does bring people together, but unfortunately, access to music education is often out of reach due to the cost.
In 2022 Becoming Independent received a generous grant from Impact 100 Redwood Circle to fund the purchase of instruments and musical equipment for the Music Academy.
The class is held in a music co-op - a space shared by an eclectic and tight-knit group of musicians in the community. During a class, one of the local bands in the co-op took a special interest in what the Music Academy was creating. They offered an impromptu two-song concert to motivate our students, and then both groups came together for a jam session. The band took time to motivate our students by offering tips and congratulating them on the beginning of their journey. It was the first of many authentic moments of connection.
Some of the students want to record albums, others want to start their own band and play live shows. All of them have made strides not only in their musical abilities but also in how they have learned to open up to friendships both within their group and in the greater community. We have seen students encourage and support their peers. A particularly shy student has found that music gives her the ability to open up, and she even took the opportunity to sing lead with the whole band backing her up. Many arrive to each class ready to learn and “become a rockstar.”
Music is a universal language. It helps us to speak and share with each other regardless of our verbal abilities. By making a way for all of us to communicate meaningfully without the use of spoken language, it is the embodiment of equity.

ED TALK RECAP: Amie Carter, SCOE, Superintendent of Schools
A Vision for Sonoma County Schools
|
|
Dr. Amie Carter, the new Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools, our January ED TALK speaker, gave us much insight into the impact of the Covid pandemic upon students and schools. She shared her top three priorities for addressing these problems: expanding mental health services across the 40 school districts, diversifying the teacher workforce, and helping students transition from high school into careers – for those on a different path than college.
Did you know?
- The current best practices for helping students struggling academically or with mental health issues include support of peer groups.
- One in five young men ages 18-25 nationally are unemployed and not in school.
- Student scores for meeting CA standards in Sonoma County show 45% of students
proficient in English language arts and 31% in math 2021-22: a reflection of the
pandemic’s toll.
