Liaison: Jewish Community Free Clinic

An Update from the Jewish Community Free Clinic

The JCFC has now signed a contract with OCHIN to implement EPIC Electronic Health Records. Our "Go Live" date will be in December of this year. We are currently putting together a volunteer team and paid staff under the direction of Dr. Deborah A. Roberts and determining the most efficient process for implementation to get the job done successfully for our healthcare center. The time has come to cast away paper records and join our sister healthcare centers in switching over to EPIC. Having EPIC will allow us to better serve our clients through the Care Everywhere portal, which makes it possible to access client information when the client first arrives to be seen. Client information will then be available to the next provider when the patient is referred elsewhere within the EPIC system, closing the referral loop and guaranteeing improved continuity of care. Thanks to the generosity of Impact 100 Redwood Circle, the Hellman Foundation, and the federal government through an appropriation from Congress passed in late December 2022, the JCFC has all the necessary resources to launch its EHR implementation plan.

Liaison: The LIME Foundation
A Success Story

Our 2021 Impact Grantee Helps Grad Find Career Goal

Jocelin Ortiz was in her first semester at Santa Rosa Junior College, trying to decide on a major, when her mom noticed a Facebook ad for The LIME Foundation’s NextGen Trades Academy.

“I couldn’t decide what I wanted to study, and my mom said, ‘Maybe this will help you figure it out,’” Ortiz, 19, recalled.

Ortiz enrolled in the NextGen Trades Academy in March 2022. In nightly and weekend sessions held over Zoom that month, she heard presentations by professionals from various trades and completed a 10-hour OSHA training for the construction industry. After a presentation by a local architect, Ortiz decided she wanted to study civil engineering.

“I’d never heard of civil engineering before,” she said. “Growing up, the only professions I knew of were lawyers, doctors, nurses and dentists.” From the architect’s description of the work that civil engineers do, Ortiz realized it would be a good fit for her. She’d previously drawn blueprints in a high school class and liked the idea of collaborating with architects, carpenters, HVAC experts, geologists, plumbers, and other building professionals.

Ortiz graduated from the NextGen Trades Academy last summer, among their 47 graduates in 2022. Now in her second year at the JC, she’s studying calculus, physics, and political science with plans to transfer to a state college to major in civil engineering. A first-generation American, Ortiz hopes to be the first in her family to graduate from college.

LIME Foundation founder Letitia Hanke arranged for Ortiz to attend a local chapter meeting of the American Council of Engineering Companies where Ortiz spoke about her experience in the NextGen Trades Academy and met with potential mentors and employers.

She credits the Trades Academy not only with helping her hone in on a professional goal but exposing her to topics she knew nothing about, including real estate, personal finance, and stress management. In fact, she benefitted so much from the Trades Academy that she’s already encouraging her younger sister, a Montgomery High School sophomore, and her brother, a Brook Hill Elementary School fifth grader, to follow her lead.
