"Guardian Angels"

At the opening of the Torah-portion, when Jacob was leaving the Land of Israel to the Diaspora, where his work of “Tikkun HaOlam” known in Kabbalah and Chassidus as “Service of Rectification and Elevation of Sparks” the verse tells us, “He had a dream: he beheld a ladder standing firmly on the ground and sloping upward, its top reaching up toward heaven. Angels of G-d were ascending it and descending it.” Rashi explains, “The angels who accompanied him in the Land of Israel were not permitted to leave the land, and so they ascended to heaven, whereupon the angels who serve outside the land descended to accompany him.”

When the Torah-portion tells us of Jacob’s returning to the Land of Israel, the verse tells us, “Jacob continued on his way, and angels of G-d went out to greet him.” Rashi explains, “Angels of the Land of Israel came to greet him for the purpose of escorting him into the Holy Land.” Meaning, that tese angels left Israel to escort him into the Land of Israel. But how could they have left the Land of Israel to greet him and escort him into the Land of Israel, when, “were not permitted to leave the land”?!

The answer lay in a simple teaching of the Chabad Rebbeim to chasidim, when a chasid wanted to leave a post in which he was needed to help the spiritual growth of the community he served to be able to move to and live in the Land of Israel: “Make here Israel!”

This is precisely what Jacob had accomplished through his service in Laban’s house and in the journey meeting with Esau. Jacob transformed the Diaspora, in which G-d was known and accepted only as a “G-d of Heaven” into a place where G-d was now acknowledged and accepted as both, “G-d of Heaven” and as “G-d of Earth”. Thus, the angels of the Land of Israel never “left” the sanctity of the Land of Israel, for they were within Jacob’s domain of the Diaspora, which was full and absolutely transformed into, “Make here Israel!”

The teaching to us all in our own personal service of “Tikkun HaOlam” “Service of Rectification and Elevation of Sparks” is to know that when we are transforming wherever we may be into “Make here Israel!” then we already have the “Angels of Israel” not only to protect us and to help us, but also, “to greet,” us, and to “escorting him into the Holy Land.”

And most importantly, may we have the true, “escorting him into the Holy Land” with our righteous Moshiach, imminently, practically and tangibly so.

Parshat Vayeitzei

Jacob on his way to Choran, camped at mount Moriah. In his dream he saw angels ascending and descending a ladder. G-d appeared and blessed Jacob, promising him a safe return. Upon awakening Jacob consecrated the stone he had placed under his head and vowed that if G-d provides his basic necessities during his sojourn, he will reciprocate accordingly.

Arriving in Choran at the home of his uncle Lavon, Jacob agreed to work as a shepherd for seven years, in order to marry his younger daughter Rachel. Lavon did not keep his word and substituted his older daughter Leah. He later agreed to offer Rachel as well, for an additional seven years of work.

Leah gave birth to Jacob’s first four sons, Reuben, Shimon, Levi, and Judah. Rachel who remained barren offered her maid Bilha as a wife to Jacob and two sons were born, Dan and Naftali. Afterwards Leah offered her maid Zilpah as a wife, and she bore two sons to Jacob, Gad and Asher.

Leah gave birth to two more sons, Yissachar and Zevulun. She also gave birth to a daughter Dina. Then G-d remembered Rachel and she gave birth to a son Joseph.

Jacob decided it was now time to return to his homeland. It was readily agreed that he would take as payment the (few) spotted and streaked sheep from amongst Lavon’s herd. Yet G-d blessed him abundantly and the sheep multiplied. Jacob and his family departed without bidding farewell to Lavon. Upon learning of the hasty departure, Lavon pursued and confronted Jacob at mount Gilad. After inquiring about his children and grandchildren, he chided Jacob for stealing his idols when in fact it was Rachel who took them. Before leaving they came to terms and made a peace treaty. Heavenly angels escorted Jacob on his journey back home.
