October 20th 2026

October always seems to pick up speed, and this year is no exception. As we move through a busy season of community events, local conversations, and planning for the months ahead, there are plenty of opportunities to stay connected and engaged here in McKinleyville.

This week brings another chance to connect at our Chamber Mixer, and we're also launching a new opportunity to help Chamber members gain extra visibility during the holiday season. Looking ahead, local agencies and community partners will gather for an important conversation about disaster preparedness in McKinleyville, while our Civic Calendar continues to make it easier to follow the meetings and decisions that shape our community.

Thank you for being part of the Chamber. We hope this issue helps you stay informed, involved, and connected.

Get Featured in Our Holiday Shop Local Guide

The holiday season is one of the best opportunities to support local businesses, nonprofits, makers, restaurants, and service providers, and we want to help Chamber members get in front of more people.

We’re putting together a McKinleyville Chamber Holiday Shop Local Guide featuring member businesses and organizations with holiday gift ideas, seasonal products and services, special promotions, open houses, fundraisers, and community events.

If you have something special planned for November or December, send it our way.

You can submit things like:

  • Holiday gift ideas or gift certificates
  • Seasonal products or services
  • Holiday specials or promotions
  • Open houses or customer appreciation events
  • Fundraisers or giving opportunities
  • Holiday events and activities
  • Experiences that make great gifts

We’ll use member submissions to help build holiday content for our website, Community Builder newsletters, and Chamber social media throughout November and December.

Chamber members only. Not sure whether your idea fits? Send it anyway and we’ll take a look.

How Prepared is McKinleyville?

Next week, local agencies and community partners will come together for a discussion focused specifically on disaster preparedness in McKinleyville.

The October 28 joint meeting of the McKinleyville Community Services District and McKinleyville Municipal Advisory Committee will explore how local agencies would coordinate during a major emergency, some of the challenges our community could face, and what preparedness looks like locally.

Residents, businesses, and community organizations are encouraged to attend and learn more.

How to Get Involved Locally

McKinleyville’s community & service clubs contribute countless volunteer hours, organize community projects, support local youth, and help meet needs throughout our area.

If you have been looking for a way to meet more people while giving back, attending a service club meeting is a great place to start.

The People Behind McKinleyville

Meet Tamara Clohessy

Tamara has deep roots in McKinleyville. She moved here in 2005 and spent 18 years teaching at Morris Elementary before retiring.

Retirement has not slowed her down much. Tamara enjoys volunteering, represents both Kiwanis of McKinleyville and Humboldt Crabs Baseball, and is always happy to talk about McKinleyville and the people and organizations that make the community special.

As a Chamber Ambassador, some of her favorite activities are ribbon cuttings and Chamber mixers, where she gets to meet people, celebrate local businesses, and stay connected to what is happening around town.

And if you have met Tamara, you probably already know she is not exactly shy. She even remembers winning a lighthearted “Groupies of the Year with the Chamber” award with her friend Carol Werronen back in 2013.

We appreciate the energy, enthusiasm, and community spirit Tamara brings to the Chamber and McKinleyville.

The first Trails, Infrastructure, Cleanups, and Security (TICS) meeting took place in October of 2024. Since the Committee and Subcommittees' formation, much progress has been made, including diligently working on creating a Forest Management Plan and a Trail Plan.

The Trails Plan/Infrastructure/Clean Ups/Security Subcommittee (TICS) meets on the Fourth Tuesday of every month at 5:15 PM at:

MCSD Office Conference Room, 1656 Sutter Road, McKinleyville, CA 95519
