OCTOBER 2020
Dear Friends,

It’s an amazing joy to see Leadership Harrisburg Area alumni out doing great things in the community. Hundreds of people are fulfilling a shared mission of raising the quality of life in Central PA through effective community service & servant leadership. These folks are typically working under the radar and quietly helping others to be the best versions of themselves. They don’t seek recognition for their efforts. But when Leadership Harrisburg Area alumni are recognized for their efforts, it’s a win for all! The entire community benefits from their example and their inspiration is magnified. Please join me in extending heartfelt congratulations to 2 very special LHA alumni who are being honored as part of the Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC Catalyst Awards.

2020 Athena Award Recipient
Sharon Ryan, LHA Class of 2001
President of Dasher Services and Author of The Talent Pool

2020 Business Diversity & Inclusion Champion Award Recipient
George Fernandez, LHA Class of 2014
Founder of the Latino Connection

Both Sharon and George are former LHA Board Members and Committee Members; they are featured speakers in our programming; generous supporters; and special friends. We are so proud of you both!

Deepest congratulations to all of the awardees including Joe Arthur, Central PA Foodbank, Catalyst Award Recipient; Highmark Blue Shield, Corporate Citizen of the Year; Todd Phillips, True Legends Barbershop, Entrepreneur of the Year; and Viscul Creative, Small Business of the Year.

Thousands of candles can be lit by a single one,
and that candle loses nothing by lighting another!

Take good care,

Give Some Holiday Cheer This Year
Each year, the YWCA Greater Harrisburg partners with local individuals and organizations to support hundreds of families in need during the holiday season for our Holiday Giving Program. Residents and clients in need sign up for the program by submitting a wish list. Cheer sponsors then adopt the client’s wish list. It’s the most festive time of the year at the YWCA! This year, more than ever, we hope to spread joy to the individuals and families in need in the midst of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic! In order to protect the health and safety of our residents, donors and team, the YWCA is following public health and safety measures with regards to holiday giving. Check out the safety protocols here. You can help us to bring holiday cheer to our clients and community from December 7-11. Here are some of the ways you can help.
  • Become a Cheer sponsor! You or your organization can sponsor a YWCA client's wish list. Click here to download a Holiday Giving sponsorship form.
  • Purchase Needed Items from General Wish List. Another way to get involved is by sponsoring items on our general wish list. These items are distributed to the women and children that arrive in shelter over the holidays. Our general wish list can be found on Amazon here
Contact Monica Flickinger at holiday_giving@ywcahbg.org or (717)-234-7931 ext. 3057 with any questions. And while we normally welcome individuals who are delivering gifts or volunteering to help wrap presents, social distancing presents us with new challenges. Therefore, volunteer opportunities will be assigned on a first come, first served basis.

GENERAL INFORMATION
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month
According to the CDC, nearly 26 million people are currently living with either Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes and another 79 Million are diagnosed with a predisposition to the disease. In 2017, when Carl Payne was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, he never expected to be in that number. He had watched his father succumb to the nasty side effects of uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes, and once Payne got over the initial shock of his “new normal” he set out on a path to beat the disease! Carl, along with his partner MaDonna Awotwi, formed a minority centric Diabetes education and advocacy organization: FType 2 Diabetes. With November being National Diabetes Awareness Month, the organization is challenging people far and wide to do 10 Squats for Diabetes because exercise has been proven to reduce the risk of Diabetes. If you would like to do your part to “Squat Out” Diabetes by participating in this challenge you can record a video of yourself and tag #ftype2diabetes on social media! Let’s all work together to make a difference, one squat at a time! For more detailed information, click here.
