MANY THANKS TO PSECU FOR SPONSORSHIP OF THE COMMUNITY CALLER! | | |
Dear Friends,
Have you ever seen the cartoon where one person is looking at a 6 and another person is standing directly on the other side and it looks like a 9? They are both so certain that they are right. And they are! Two people looking at the very same circumstance, item, or situation from different angles are, of course, going to see it very differently. It’s just a fact. It’s true with the 6 and the 9 as well as current events. No matter the situation, the only way to move forward, make progress, and forge solutions is to walk over to the other side and take a look at that 6 or 9 from the other person’s perspective. This give us the context and understanding necessary for the next steps. As community leaders, it is up to each one of us to be the one to cross lines of disagreement, crisis, and disaster; let go of our need to be right, and walk over to the other side - if only just to get a glimpse. In the words of Henry David Thoreau, “Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other’s eyes for an instant?”
As a truly hopeful person, I do believe that our communities, state, and nation can find a path to move beyond the hatred and violence to build quality of life for all. This has been Leadership Harrisburg Area’s mission for 40 years and I know there are hundreds of leaders out there doing their part! And, nothing builds a community more so than giving back. Please check out the great opportunities to connect with your neighbors through the events and volunteer listings in this publication. Many thanks to our friends at PSECU for their continued support.
When progress is stagnant and relationships are strained, here are some words of wisdom that I find to be great reminders of our calling as leaders. I hope they help you too!
“Continue to be who you are, to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness.”
Maya Angelou
“It’s so beautifully simple that it can be applied so broadly. The gist is that the other person is always at least 10% right and you are always at least 10% wrong.”
Shirzad Chamine
“Only a true, natural servant automatically responds to any problem by listening first.”
Robert Greenleaf
“Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Reconciliation was a means of struggle as much as it was the end goal of our struggle.”
Nelson Mandela
“If we can’t see eye to eye, let’s try to see heart to heart!”
