May is the unofficial beginning of summertime fun in the city. I am happy to report we have a full calendar of events and activities starting this month with the Memorial Day Ceremony, Unity Day in June, the Annual Golf Outing in July, and the Car Show in August. It is great to see our favorite annual events return this year. For a list of highlighted Parks & Recreation events, see below.

We have begun the process of hiring an architecture firm for the first phase of the Park Improvement Master Plan. Below you will find the phase plan and the layout designed to maximize the current footprint of the park and community center.

There is so much to be excited about in our city with the Mayland renovation underway, moving forward with the implementation of the parks, pool, and community center Master Plan, and especially the return of summertime annual events and activities. There is no doubt we a lot to be grateful for in Mayfield Heights. I am looking forward to a festive season and to once again see residents enjoying the summertime fun!

Here's What's Happening at City Hall

Mayfield Heights Park Improvement Master Plan

Thanks to the passage of Issue 9, the City of Mayfield Heights can initiate the Mayfield Heights Parks Improvement Master Plan, designed in 2015 by an award-winning recreation design firm the city commissioned. The Master Plan is designed to maximize the current footprint of the park and community center while also expanding the usage of facilities. The plan’s vision has multiple moving parts and includes two phases. Preparations for Phase I are now underway.

Phase I: Reconfiguring South of Marsol Road Facilities

Preparation for Phase I has begun and includes plans for the construction of a new pool, community center, and gymnasium. We are currently in the process of hiring an architecture firm. Construction will begin once plans are approved. The estimated time of completion is two years.

Phase II: Reconfiguration of City Park

With the intent of extending the seasonal use of the park, The Master Plan includes a multi-purpose synthetic turf field, which would accommodate various sports activities for an additional 2-3 months out of the year. Additionally, Phase II will include updated pavilions, an updated playground, and new park amenities. Construction of Phase II is planned to begin while Phase I is underway.

Hillcrest Hospital’s architects have submitted plans for approximately 11,000 sq. ft. expansion/addition of the existing cancer center. This will be a 2nd-floor addition supported by a covered area to allow for patients to be dropped off or picked up. The previous variance permitting the rear setback to be 75 ft. will be maintained.

From the Police Department

Grant for OVI Detail

Mayfield Heights PD received a grant from the Cuyahoga County DUI Task Force for $2,500. Funds will be used to increase the number of officers for traffic enforcement, specifically for impaired drivers, this spring and summer. Take advantage of "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over"!

Parker Speed Detail

The digital speed sign was placed on Parker Drive for the months of March and April. The digital speed sign collects data regarding the number of vehicles that travel down the road and the speed of the vehicles. The data revealed that approximately 1400 vehicles drive south on Parker each day. Parker Drive is on our directed patrol list and additional traffic enforcement should be expected on all residential streets this spring and summer. Slow down!

May is Motorcycle Safety Month

Motorcycle riders continue to be overrepresented in fatal traffic crashes. In 2018, 4,985 motorcyclists died. To keep everyone safe, we urge drivers and motorcyclists to share the road and be alert, and we're reminding motorcyclists to make themselves visible, to use DOT-compliant motorcycle helmets, and to always ride sober. (NHTSA, 2021). Watch for bikes and save lives.

Bicycle Unit

Several Mayfield Heights officers may be doing bicycle patrols beginning in May through August. The primary objective of the bicycle unit is to increase community engagement. Officers will also enforce parking violations, issue bicycle licenses, and increase patrol in residential and shopping areas. Make sure you wave if you see them!

Neighborhood Watch

An in-person Neighborhood Watch meeting will be held in June at a location to be determined! If you wish to join the neighborhood watch program or want additional information, please visit the website.

From the Service Department

Recycle Right!

Mayfield Heights residents are provided with (one) 64-gallon recycling cart. Recycle service occurs the same day as refuse collection. Please do not use your recycle cart for refuse. Recycle carts containing refuse or recyclable items that are contaminated with food, liquids or other non-recyclable materials will not be emptied and will be tagged to notify the resident of improper use. Cardboard, steel cans, aluminum cans, newspapers, office paper, junk mail, glass bottles, and plastic bottles can be placed in the recycle cart.

For residents who do not have curbside recycling, please take your recyclables to the recycling center located in the south section of the Ross C. DeJohn Community Center parking lot at 6306 Marsol Rd. The center is under surveillance and you may be asked for identification to ensure residency. Hours of operation are Monday and Wednesday 6 AM – 4:30 PM and Saturday from 6 AM – 11 AM (Closed on Holidays).

From the Fire Department

Hydrant Flushing

The Fire Department will begin the annual fire hydrant flushing program on May 10^th, running through July 31^st. It is important for the Fire Department to check each fire hydrant in the City to assure they are in proper working condition and to exercise the components on the hydrant. Any issues found are reported to Cleveland Water for repairs. Signs will be posted on the ends of the streets to be tested days prior to the hydrant flushing. In the event you find your water discolored, run the cold water tap until the water is clear. The flushing scheduled may be altered due to call volume and weather conditions.
