Canyon Rd Reconstruction

TLC Plumbing and Utility, under contract with the Los Alamos County Public Works Department, has begun Phase 1 of the three-phase road and utility construction project on Central Ave and Canyon Rd. Traffic delays are expected.

Phase 1 starts at Central Ave and Rose St and continues to the western driveway of the Aquatic Center. This segment of work is anticipated to be completed by August 8. The staff back driveway of Los Alamos High School is scheduled to reopen Tuesday August 2. The driveway is being removed and replaced. Crews will also be working on the sewer main line north of Los Alamos High School’s practice field.

Phase 2 will start at Canyon Rd at the Aquatic Center western driveway and continue to 39th St. This work is scheduled between September 8 and October 1.

Phase 3 is scheduled to begin October 1 and will include the section of Canyon between the Aquatic Center and the Nature Center. Completion of all three phases of the project is scheduled for the end of November 2022.

The Aquatic Center, Canyon Village Apartments, and IHM Catholic Church can be accessed on Canyon Rd traveling east from Diamond Dr. Officials with Public Works ask motorists to please follow detour signs.

The intersection at Central and Rose, as well as the intersection at Central and Canyon are closed to through traffic. To access to the United Church, Nature Center and Jewish Center, motorists should use Rose and Canyon westward from 15th St.

Sidewalk closures are posted with detour signage to keep pedestrians clear of the work zone.

According to the Traffic and Streets Division, crews will be adjusting the timing sequence of the traffic signals along Diamond to help with traffic flow patterns. Additionally, Atomic City Transit and Park and Ride staff have adjusted bus routes accordingly. Services such as mail delivery, trash and recycling collection, and emergency services will be maintained.

Construction hours are Monday through Friday 5:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. To stay on-schedule and avoid weather delays, crews will have an earlier start time. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to use caution around construction activities, avoid entering the work zone and obey all work zone signage. Motorists are asked to utilize Trinity Drive as much as possible as the main thoroughfare between neighborhoods and the downtown area.

The Tennis Courts located on Canyon will be closed during the project, as it is being utilized as an equipment staging area for the duration of the project.

Public Works officials thank the community in advance for their continued cooperation and patience. Please call or email the Public Works Department at (505) 662-8150 or lacpw@lacnm.us with questions or concerns.
Sherwood Blvd and Aztec Ave

Crews with Star Paving Company will continue road and drainage improvements on Sherwood Blvd between Piedra Loop and Aztec Ave.

Sherwood will be closed to Grand Canyon Dr for all through traffic prior to the intersection of Aztec. Residents on Sherwood will be required to enter and exit Sherwood from Grand Canyon. This closure is necessary to facilitate installation of new storm drainpipe.

Closure for this first phase of work will continue through the middle of August. Closure for the next phase of roadwork from Longview Dr to Aztec has begun. The final phase will be Piedra Loop to Grand Canyon and is scheduled for late August 2022.

Traffic devices and detour signs are in place to help motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians navigate around the work zone.

Vehicle access is limited to those who reside in the immediate work area and mail delivery, emergency services, trash, and recycling collection. For safety of the traveling public, residents are asked not to remove or relocate traffic control devices, signs, and barricades. Area residents who may have special access needs are asked to contact the Public Works Department.

Work schedules are subject to change pending weather conditions and any material shipping delays. Work Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Modular Home Transport to Sycamore Street August 3 and 4

JR Theroux Mobile Home Service, Inc. will be transporting two halves of a modular home to Sycamore St beginning with the first half on Wednesday, August 3 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and followed by the second half on Thursday, August 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The frames will be transported back out of Los Alamos later those same days.

The first frame will be transported off the site and out of Los Alamos via Truck Route on Wednesday, August 3 at 7:00 p.m. The second frame will be transported on Thursday, August 4 at 7:00 p.m.

The route will begin at Omega Bridge (Los Alamos Canyon bridge) and head north on Diamond Dr to Trinity Dr. The transport will make a left on Trinity and head west to 48th St then Sandia Dr to the intersection of Sandia and Diamond. The transport will then make a left on Diamond and head north to Sycamore St and the destination. The frames will travel the same route in reverse.

The contractor is asking residents who live along Trinity or Sycamore to avoid parking vehicles on the street those days. Vehicles should be parked off the streets in residents’ respective driveways, if possible, to clear a path for the oversized load to move along the route. Fliers will be posted in advance on vehicles and doors along the route.
