Public Works Projects: 
The projects listed in this section are being managed by County Public Works staff through contractors. Please note the below information is based on a schedule provided by the contractors and may change due to weather or other delays.


Hilltop House Demolition Underway

 

All Rite Construction, under contract with Los Alamos County Public Works, has begun demolition of the former Hilltop House hotel and gas station, located at the NM502/Central Ave roundabout. Regular truck traffic will be entering and exiting the project site throughout the duration of the project. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are asked to use caution in the area of the work zone. Demolition is expected to be completed by January 2023, weather permitting. The sidewalk along the site remains closed.



Realignment of 35th St at Trinity Dr (NM502)

 

As part of the realignment project for the 35th St and Trinity Dr intersection, a traffic shift (north) to the middle turning lane has begun west of 37th St in the east bound direction for approximately 1,000 feet. The lane shift and all traffic control devices will remain in place for the duration of the project. Anticipated project completion is 60 calendar days. 



Canyon Rd Reconstruction

 

TLC Plumbing and Utility, under contract with the Los Alamos County Public Works Department has completed Phase 1 of the three-phase project on Central Ave and Canyon Rd. 

 

The final section of Phase 2 paving will begin on Monday, Oct. 10 from IMH Catholic Church to 39th St. The final surface of pavement placement is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Oct. 12 from 39th St to Oppenheimer Dr. Flagger operations will be onsite to direct traffic around the construction. 


Construction hours are Monday through Friday 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. To stay on-schedule and avoid weather delays, crews will have an earlier start time. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to use caution around construction activities, avoid entering the work zone and obey all work zone signage. Motorists are asked to utilize Trinity Dr as much as possible as the main thoroughfare between neighborhoods and the downtown area.  

 

Access to the Aquatic Center and Canyon Village Apartments continues to be provided from the east via Central. LAPS Staff Parking Lot and IHM Catholic Church continues to be accessible from the west via Diamond Dr and Canyon through the work zone.


Sidewalk closures are posted with detour signs to keep pedestrians clear of the work zone. 

 

Atomic City Transit and Park and Ride staff have adjusted bus routes accordingly. Services such as mail delivery, trash and recycling collection, and emergency services will be maintained. 

 

Completion of all three phases of the project is scheduled at the end of October 2022.

 

The Tennis Courts located on Canyon will remain closed, as the area is being utilized as an equipment staging area for the duration of the project.



Sherwood Blvd and Aztec Ave

 

Star Paving Company continues road and drainage improvements on Sherwood Blvd between Piedra Loop and Aztec Ave.   

 

Sherwood continues to be closed to through traffic from north of Aztec to Grand Canyon Dr with grading of the roadway underway in preparation for paving. Residents on Sherwood will be required to enter and exit Sherwood from north during this time.   

 

The third phase of the project continues with the eastbound lane of Grand Canyon at Sherwood remaining closed in preparation of pavement reconstruction. Please follow all detour signs. 

 

Traffic devices and detour signs are in place to help motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians navigate around the work zone.  

 

Vehicle access is limited to those who reside in the immediate work area and mail delivery, emergency services, trash, and recycling collection. For safety of the traveling public, residents are asked not to remove or relocate traffic control devices, signs, and barricades. Area residents who may have special access needs are asked to contact the Public Works Department.


Work schedules are subject to change pending weather conditions and any material shipping delays. Work Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.



DP Rd Utility Infrastructure Replacement and Roadway Reconstruction 


A contractor working for Qualcon Builders will continue construction of the remaining sidewalk sections, replacement of broken curb and gutter, street light installation and clean up and grading along the sides of DP Rd. These activities will impact DP Rd from Trinity Dr to Fire Station #2 with segments of the roadway periodically restricted to one-lane traffic controlled by a flagger. One-lane traffic restrictions will occur only during hours of construction potentially from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.  

 

This work in DP Road is related to the Canyon Walk Apartments and The Bluffs senior housing (under construction). All remaining construction activities related to the reconstruction of DP Rd are now expected to be completed by the end of October 2022 (weather permitting).


Traffic & Streets Projects: 

The projects listed in this section are being managed by County Traffic & Streets Division staff. Please slow down and use caution within the construction work zones. Call Daniel Blea, Traffic and Streets Manager for concerns, 505-663-8206.


Asphalt Patching along Barrraca Mesa, North Mesa, Sumac, 40th through 48th Streets off Urban St and on Arkansas Ave

 

Crews will be patching sections of asphalt beginning Tuesday, Oct. 11 until the project is complete. Work will begin daily at 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.


Work will start on Barranca Mesa and move to North Mesa, Sumac, 40th St through 48th St off Urban and on Arkansas. A flagging operation will be in place at each location. 


Pedestrian and vehicle traffic will need to watch for fresh oil signs in these locations. Please drive slowly to avoid any accumulation of oil on your vehicle. 


Crosswalk Striping on Trinity Drive, Villa Street and North Mesa Road

 

Crews will be striping crosswalks at the following locations:

-       West Trinity Drive at 41st St and at 45th St

-       Villa Street at 38th St

-       North Mesa Road at Hawk Dr


Crews will start work Tuesday, Oct. 11 and continue until complete. Work hours will begin daily at 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. A flagging operation will be in place at each location.


Utilities Projects: 

The projects listed in this section are being managed by Dept. of Public Utilities (DPU) staff. Please slow down and use caution within the construction work zones. Call Dennis Segura, DPU Project Manager, 505-662-8123.


Utility Work at the Southwest Corner of Rover Blvd and State Road 4


DPU’s contractor will be doing a natural gas tie-in as part of a larger gas system improvement project. Utility work at the southwest corner of Rover Blvd and State Road 4 will require a traffic diversion between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. from Monday, Oct. 10, through Friday, Oct. 14. Traffic lanes will not be closed but will be narrowed to keep vehicles out of the work zone. Sidewalks will be closed in the work zone. 


Water Leak Repair on Iris St.


Gas, Water, and Sewer crews from DPU will continue to repair a water leak on Iris St on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Drivers should expect to see traffic controls in place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Signs warning motorists of the road closure will be placed at the corner of Iris and 6th St. A short section of Iris will be closed near the middle of the block. DPU crews will restrict traffic to only residents who live on Iris.

Non-County Projects: 

The following road construction updates are posted below in the interest of keeping residents informed but are being managed or conducted by others. Please obey all traffic devices and slowdown in work zones.


Sioux St Sidewalk Closure

 

Cablecom, LLC, will be closing the sidewalk at 1103 Sioux St on all three sides of the property. Pedestrian traffic should cross at either the nothwest corner of Seminole St at Iroquois St or at the southwest corner of Sioux at Iroquois. 


Crews will be boring to replace coaxial cable in this location. The work will begin Tuesday, Oct. 11, weather permitting, and should be completed by Monday, Oct. 17. Work hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

ADVANCE NOTICE:

Directional Bore to Install Fiber and Conduit Along Trinity Dr at Knecht St 

 

SW Safety Services will be doing a directional bore of approximately 150 ft, parallel and across Trinity Dr between Knecht St and 15th St to install fiber and conduit beginning Monday, Oct. 24. 

Work hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Both the north and south sidewalks will be closed for the duration of the project. Estimated completion date is Thursday, Oct. 27.
