All Rite Construction, under contract with Los Alamos County Public Works, has begun demolition of the former Hilltop House hotel and gas station, located at the NM502/Central Ave roundabout. Regular truck traffic will be entering and exiting the project site throughout the duration of the project.

To keep construction crews and the public safe during the demolition of the Hilltop House, a lane closure, sidewalk closure and detour will be in place near the roundabout on NM502 and Trinity Drive, on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Motorists traveling westbound on NM 502 will follow a short detour on Central Ave. and use Knecht St. or 15th St. to access Trinity Drive. While motorists traveling eastbound can use Knecht St. or 15th Street to access Central Avenue then continue to NM 502. Sidewalks on the north side of Trinity Drive between the roundabout and DP Road will also be closed for pedestrian safety. Access to businesses and DP Road will be maintained.

Motorists approaching the roundabout from all directions should use caution, pay attention to roadway signs approaching and within the work zone.

Demolition is expected to be completed by January 2023, weather permitting.

Canyon Rd Reconstruction

TLC Plumbing and Utility, under contract with the Los Alamos County Public Works Department has completed Phase 1 of the three-phase project on Central Ave and Canyon Rd.

The final surface of pavement placement continues from 39th Street to Oppenheimer Dr.

The eastbound lane of Canyon will be partially opened to one-way traffic during the week of October 24th. Access to the Aquatic Center and Canyon Village Apartments, LAPS Staff Parking Lot and IHM Catholic Church will be accessible from the west via Diamond Dr and Canyon through the work zone.

Partial sidewalk closures are posted with detour signage to keep pedestrians clear of the work zone.

Atomic City Transit and Park and Ride staff have adjusted bus routes accordingly. Services such as mail delivery, trash and recycling collection, and emergency services will be maintained.

Completion of the project is scheduled at the end of October 2022.

Construction hours are Monday through Friday 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. To stay on-schedule and avoid weather delays, crews will have an earlier start time. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to use caution around construction activities, avoid entering the work zone and obey all work zone signage. Motorists are asked to utilize Trinity Dr as much as possible as the main thoroughfare between neighborhoods and the downtown area.

The Tennis Courts located on Canyon will remain closed, as the area is being utilized as an equipment staging area for the duration of the project.
