We often think of school as sitting at a desk, working in solitude on a math worksheet. But when you get into our schools, as I did a lot this week, you see much more. You see movement, you see connection, you see art. My evenings this week consisted of athletics--girls basketball, boys basketball, boys swimming, and wrestling. On Wednesday, I visited the middle school and was proud to see
variety
. I saw students being creative as they decorated classroom doors for the holidays. I saw students being active as they played badminton. I saw students having hands-on learning experiences in Makerspace and useful learning experiences in Spanish class. On Thursday, I attended HCE's second and third grade winter concert, which turned my week's cheer to
holiday
cheer. I look forward to next week, which I'm certain will be filled with just as much movement, connection, and creativity. The holidays are almost here!

Community Service Project
|
On December 20, students in Ms. Martin’s Basic Study Skills and Literature class will teach a lesson on gratitude and kindness to the third grade class of Sherman Multicultural Art School MPS. Whitnall students will assist the children in making a craft for someone they care about. The Whitnall students will then surprise the third graders with gifts that have been wrapped and personalized with names.
Please consider donating food gift cards of any amount to support families at Sherman School. You can drop them off in Ms. Martin's mailbox or WHS room 273 by December 19.

AP Spanish Community Service - Learning Project
|
The AP Spanish classes are currently holding a drive for the families of the 16th Street Clinic. They are collecting items for Stork’s Nest, the clinic's family outreach program. Whitnall's AP Spanish classes have been the primary providers for Stork's Nest for the last ten years! They highly encourage you to contribute anything that you can - every dollar and item counts!
Besides monetary donations, they are collecting items such as cultural foods (onions, cans of tomatoes, garlic, and dried beans and rice), baby care and clothing items (diapers, baby wipes, hats, mittens, sleepers, and onesies), and toys and books for children. They are accepting new and gently used items only. Donations may be dropped of in the high school office or brought to room 222, Señora Brand’s classroom. You may donate until Tuesday, December 19.
They are looking forward to practicing their conversational Spanish skills by talking with the parents at the clinic.

Kindness, Empathy, Wonder
|
All Whitnall Middle School students participated in activities supporting kindness and empathy, culminating in viewing the movie

Seventh Graders in the School Forest
|
Prior to the snow falling, seventh graders planted wildflower seeds in the School Forest to support the development of the Oak Savannah!

Staff vs Student Volleyball Game
|
WMS is going to celebrate the successes we have had this first semester by holding a staff versus student volleyball game on Friday, December 22!

Edgerton Elementary is looking for someone to fill a noon hour supervisor position. This is a part-time position, Monday through Friday, 1.5 hours (11:30 AM - 1:00 PM) per day. If you or someone you know enjoys working with children and are interested in applying, please visit the

Next week, our grade five instrumental musicians will be welcoming EES students and staff with holiday music in the hallways. The fifth grade orchestra students will be performing on Monday, December 18 and the fifth grade band students will perform on Wednesday, December 20. Some EES staff members may even dust off their instruments and join in on the fun! Thank you to Mrs. Luecht for organizing this!

EES 2nd and 3rd graders have been busy preparing for their upcoming holiday concerts. Please mark your calendars for our 2nd grade concert on Tuesday, December 19 at 6:00 PM and our 3rd grade concert on Wednesday, December 20 at 6:00 PM.

Our fifth grade instrumental students will spread some cheer by entertaining students with holiday music as they enter school. The orchestra students will perform on Tuesday, December 19 and the band students on Thursday, December 21.

Pull out those ugly holiday sweaters and wear them on Thursday, December 21! It’s holiday wear at its worst!

First Annual Staff Variety Show
|
Our first annual Staff Variety Show will be on Friday, December 22. Students will certainly be amazed and entertained by the talented staff performances. We will also have an all school sing along. With at least 700 voices, this is sure to be a festive choral event!
