Health Updates
Contact Tracing Timeline
Over this past week, there have been concerns as to why it has taken so long to notify families of a close contact. When you are notified of the date of last contact with the positive individual, this is not necessarily the date the individual tested positive. For contact tracing purposes, a positive case is considered contagious 48 hours prior to symptom onset. For example, if a student developed symptoms on a Friday and eventually tested positive, we would begin contact tracing on the prior Wednesday, 48 hours prior to the symptom onset. Unfortunately, test results can take 24 hours up to 5 days, depending on where the test was performed and what kind of test was done. We have been able to complete contact tracing for positive cases within 24 hours of the district receiving notification of the result. The time frame of when test results are received in comparison to when symptoms first started is also dependent on when the individual is tested, as sometimes it is a couple days after symptom onset. Our practice is following the current guidelines provided to us from the CDC and health departments however we cannot control when people decide to go get tested or the length of time test results take. We recognize this is a tough time but we have been working very hard to stay on top of COVID-19 and keep the entire district in the in-person model and to assure timely communication occurs.

Student Awaiting Test Results
Families are reminded that students who have been tested for COVID-19 need to stay home until test results are received, even if they begin to feel better. Please follow the following steps while you are awaiting your test results:

1. Please DO NOT SEND your child to school until he/she has been cleared to return by a member of health services.

2. If your child is negative, please send a copy of the results to the covidreporting@whitnall.com email address. This documentation is needed to medically excuse these absences.

3. Continue to report your child's absences to your school as you normally do.

4. If your child is positive, notify covidreporting@whitnall.com ASAP. Please provide the date when the symptoms started and any close contacts your child may have had within the district, outside of the classroom. Below are resources from DHS to help guide you as well.

You may also refer to the DHS Next Steps: While You Wait for Your COVID-19 Test Results fact sheet to guide you.

Please review these additional COVID Reminders.

These steps will help to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and keep our community safe.
