Current 6th and 7th Grade Students
Current 6th and 7th Grade students will be getting their registration materials at the start of February. Now is a good time to talk about what elective options your students may want to take for the 2020-2021 school year.

Current 5th Grade Students
WMS administration and counselors will be visiting elementary 5th grade classrooms in the next few weeks to talk about WMS and 6th grade. Registration information for current 5th grade students will be sent home mid-February.
Social Emotional Learning
WMS continues to recognize the importance of social-emotional learning in developing a well-rounded individual. Throughout our social-emotional curriculum, your child will experience skill-building lessons in the four main areas of self-discipline, responsibility, good judgment, and respect for others. In the month of January, lessons are being delivered within ELA and Science classrooms. This month’s lesson content will be related to developing a positive learning community and personal development.

Feel free to invite your child to discuss what they are learning and share your personal experiences of adolescence. Relevant topics to explore with your child include strengths and areas for growth, different ways people define and achieve success, and the positive decisions, values, and goals that help people become successful. Have your child share an experience of learning a new skill that was challenging and how they used a growth-mindset to overcome obstacles. This can be an opportunity to share with your child how you handled change and stressors growing up.

If at any time you feel your family or child could benefit from additional community-based supports, please reference the district webpage to learn more about the Student and Family Assistance Program.

Traditional volunteers are classroom based, teaching 30-45 minutes, once a week for 5-6 weeks. All materials and necessary training are provided by JA. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact Lori Windt in the school office at 414-525-8911 or lawindt@whitnall.com.   Click here for the JA website, which gives an overview of the programs offered. Thank you for considering this opportunity.
