APHSA, ACCT, and NCAP Awarded SNAP E&T National Partnership Grant, October 16, 2020 - APHSA is pleased to announce it has been selected, in partnership with the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) and National Community Action Partnership (NCAP), for the FY2020 SNAP Employment & Training (E&T) National Partnership Grant. During the three-year grant period APHSA and its partners will deliver technical assistance through national membership organizations to develop members’ organizational capacity to provide quality, skill based, employer driven E&T to SNAP recipients.

Young Workers Hit Hard By The COVID-19 Economy, October 2020 - This report from the Economic Policy Institute assesses youth workers' employment outcomes (ages 16-24) during the pandemic. It examines the short and long term of the recession on those workers. The report also provides recommendations to improve young workers' labor market outcomes through enforcement and enhancement of labor standards.
Cash Matters: Reimagining Anti-Racist TANF Policies In Georgia, October 2020 - This report from the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute applies a race equity lens to reverse TANF racial disparities in Georgia. This report uses administrative data and legislative policy information to show how COVID-19 has exacerbated black families' access to cash assistance. The report provides some recommendations for policymakers to reverse that trend.
30 Weeks Into The COVID-19 Pandemic And Workers Desperately Need Stimulus, October 15, 2020 - This blog from the Economic Policy Institute, outlines data showing that after 31 weeks into the COVID-19 pandemic the number of people who are depending on unemployment insurance to pay their bills remains breathtakingly high: There are nearly 22 million more people on unemployment insurance now than there were one year ago.
- The Administration for Children and Families released its annual report, which includes an interactive map that allows viewers to click state by state to see spending breakdowns, and a compilation of pie-charts that outlines spending for every state.

AAP Updates Interim Guidance On Child Care During COVID-19, October 2020 - The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has updated its guidance on child care during COVID-19. The update includes new advice on how to support the changing emotional and behavioral needs of children in care during the pandemic. Additionally, the update includes a downloadable symptoms checklist for providers to use while accessing children.
Fostering Inequity: How COVID-19 Amplifies Dangers for LGBTQ+ Youth in Care, October 2020 - This report, released by Children’s Rights, identifies how the pandemic is amplifying some of the risks for LGBTQ+ youth in child welfare systems and proposes practices to mitigate them. It was developed with extensive input from young people currently or formerly in foster care and young people currently or formerly experiencing homelessness who identify as LGBTQ+, as well as direct service workers and offers recommendations for federal, state, and local governments.

Learning and Action in Policy and Partnerships (LAPP) - Data Across Sectors for Health (DASH) - With support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), DASH in partnership with the Center for Health Care Strategies (CHCS), is pleased to launch the LAPP program. This program will provide award opportunities to community organizations who are partnered with their state government to advance community-led programs focused on data-sharing efforts to improve health, equity and well-being. Five awardees will receive $100,000 each to: (a) engage partners to advance existing data-sharing or data-integration efforts; (b) systematically share data across sectors; and (c) build relationships among community and state partners to inform decision-making and strengthen systems that support community goals for improved health, well-being and equity. Application Due Date: December 16, 3:30 PM EST.

The Opioid Crisis and the Hispanic/Latino Population: An Urgent Issue, July 2020 - The current ongoing opioid crisis is one of the most widespread epidemics that is affecting all racial and ethnic groups. This report put out by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) addresses how the opioid epidemic is currently affecting the Hispanic/Latino population by considering the numbers involved, contextual factors and challenges to prevention and treatment, as well as innovative outreach and engagement strategies to connect young people to evidence-based treatment, all while emphasizing the importance of community voice.
Centering Workers—How to Modernize Unemployment Insurance Technology, October 2020 - This report presents findings of an intensive study of state efforts to modernize their unemployment insurance (UI) benefit systems. It offers lessons drawn from state experiences and recommends user-friendly design and implementation methods to help states succeed in future modernization projects. This report includes specific recommendations that can inform the federal and state response to the unprecedented volume of unemployment claims during the pandemic, as well as ideas for long-term reforms.
Expanding the Toolbox: The Whole of Government Response to Homelessness, October 2020 - The United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) unveiled its new strategic plan, Expanding the Toolbox: The Whole-of-Government Response to Homelessness. The strategic plan emphasizes addressing the root causes of homelessness and prioritizing trauma-informed care to support the success of each individual and family experiencing homelessness.
The American Opioid Epidemic in Special Populations: Five Examples, October 26, 2020 - Currently the United States is experiencing an unprecedented crisis dealing with the misuse of prescription drugs and illicit opioid misuse. This report put out by The National Academy of Medicine shows the five different types of special populations that have been particularly affected by the opioid epidemic, and how to specifically tailor treatment approaches to these special populations in order to help end the epidemic.
