A Women of Reform Judaism Organization
What is Tu B'Shevat?
Tu B'Shevat is a minor holiday we celebrate on the  15th of Shevat, this year corresponding to February 10th. Kn own as the  "Birthday of the Trees", t his is celebrated when trees are planted in Israel, especially olives, grapes, figs, pomegranates, and the "king of fruits" the apple, the most versatile and worldly.  Some modern practices include donating money to plant trees in Israel or planting trees locally. T u B'Shevat is a holiday that reminds us of our commitment to the earth and to our role as caretakers of the environment.

We sometimes celebrate by having a Tu B'Shevat Seder at which time we eat fruits and nuts the Torah praises -seven 'fruits' in particular: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. These fruits are include in three categories: 1) fruits that have a pit inside and you eat only the outside, 2) fruits that you eat the inside but not the outside and 3) fruits that you eat both the inside and outside. At the Seder we also have two glasses or wine, red and white. Starting with white symbolizing winter a little red is poured into white eventually ending with all the red in the white for spring...the planting of trees.

Although a minor holiday, it brings awareness to the importance of trees in our lives.
This child's poem reminds us of this holiday.
Here winter snow is falling, but in Israel spring is calling
Little blossoms open please, today's the birthday of the trees
Thank you, God for Israel's spring, thank you, God for everything !

We are all looking forward to spring! The Sisterhood Board
