A Message From Our CEO, Amy Sugimoto

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I’m excited to announce that our CASA program is officially up and running in Sutter County! This expansion marks a significant milestone, enabling us to provide critical support to more children in need. We are deeply grateful to the Sutter County community for the warm welcome and overwhelming enthusiasm.

A heartfelt thank you to The Honorable Judge Santana and The Honorable Judge Ashby for their steadfast support. Thanks to their commitment, youth are already being assigned to our program, allowing our dedicated volunteers to begin making meaningful connections with the children who need them most.

The need in Sutter County is immense, with over 100 children and teens waiting for the stability, mentorship, and advocacy that a CASA volunteer provides. Our mission is to ensure every one of them has a trusted CASA advocate. If you’re interested in serving youth in Sutter or Yuba County, please reach out to us at volunteer@casaconnects.org

Volunteer Spotlight

Honoring CASA Bobby Sue Mizer

For this CASA volunteer, advocacy is not something she learned. It is something she has lived.

Her journey began early, growing up in a home that welcomed foster children and later stepping into a caregiving role for her niece and nephew during her teenage years. From first steps and bedtime bottles to ABCs and 123s, she proudly describes herself as “Mom #2.” That foundation of care followed her into adulthood, including volunteering as a Wish Granter with the Make-A-Wish Foundation at just 19 years old. While she does not have children of her own, she holds a deep respect for children and a strong belief that every child deserves the chance to design a life they are excited to live.

Through her work as a CASA, she has seen firsthand how consistency and connection can change a young person’s world. Her youth has a strong, loving bond with her resource parent, and together they have helped show her that her world can be bigger than it once felt. As the oldest sibling, her youth often takes on a caretaker role at home, but during their one-on-one time, she gets to simply be a kid. Over time, she has watched her youth feel more seen, heard, and valued, growing in confidence and walking with a new sense of certainty. “My hope is that she knows she has people on her team and that she deserves the world,” she shares.

One of her most powerful moments as a CASA came through educational advocacy. While reviewing records, she discovered that her youth’s special education assessment had been repeatedly delayed. What followed was nearly ten months of research, emails, documentation, and persistence. Her advocacy paid off when her youth finally received the educational support she needed. It reinforced just how critical steady follow-through can be in a child’s life.

Some of the most meaningful moments, however, have been the simplest. A visit to the zoo, her youth’s first, stands out as a favorite. Something ordinary to many felt incredibly special to share, and knowing she may have helped create a core memory is something she will always carry with her.

We are deeply grateful for volunteers like her, advocates who show up with heart, persistence, and the belief that every child deserves to be seen, supported, and empowered.

Teddy Bear Clinic

This hands-on, play-based event is perfect for families, CASAs, and foster youth. Children are invited to bring their favorite stuffed animal for a special “check-up,” complete with taking teddy’s temperature, listening to their heartbeat, and applying band-aids.

Through imaginative play, kids can explore what a doctor visit feels like in a fun, supportive environment, helping ease fears and build confidence.

Give Smarter in 2026 with a Qualified Charitable Distribution and the New Above-the-Line Deduction

If you want your generosity to go even further this year, here are two powerful tax tools to know about when you make charitable donations in 2026:

📌 Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

If you are 70½ or older, you can direct up to $111,000 from your IRA straight to a qualified nonprofit like CASA without including the distribution in your taxable income. This gift can count toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) and helps reduce your taxable income—an excellent way to support your favorite causes while boosting your tax efficiency.

📌 Above-the-Line Deduction for Charitable Gifts

Starting in 2026, thanks to federal tax changes, taxpayers who take the standard deduction (don’t itemize) can now claim an above-the-line charitable deduction.

  • Up to $1,000 for single filers
  • Up to $2,000 for married couples filing jointly

This means even if you do not itemize, you may reduce your taxable income by the amount of cash donations you make directly to qualified charities.

🔹 What this means for you:

Whether you’re a retiree using IRA distributions to support nonprofits or a donor who takes the standard deduction, 2026 offers more ways to make your giving count—both for your community and your taxes.

Always consult your tax advisor or financial planner to make sure you’re using these options in the most beneficial way for your situation.

Big Day of Giving Is Coming, and

You Can Be Part of It

Every year, our community unites for a powerful 24-hour online giving marathon that provides a vital lifeline for local nonprofits and the vulnerable populations they serve. Last year, thanks to the generosity of people like you, we raised an incredible $31,000 to fund our essential programs. This year, we are setting our sights even higher with a goal of $50,000—and we cannot reach that milestone without your dedicated support.

As spring approaches, you have a unique opportunity to change the trajectory of lives for foster children, at-risk youth, and struggling families by championing our cause during the Big Day of Giving.

One of the most effective and heartfelt ways to support the mission of CASA of Placer, Yuba & Sutter is to lead a peer-to-peer fundraising team. By creating your own personal fundraising page, you can invite your friends, family, and professional networks to join you in making a difference. This isn't just about soliciting donations; it’s about storytelling. It’s an opportunity to share why our mission resonates with you personally and to demonstrate how, together, we can provide a stable, guiding light for youth navigating the complexities of the foster care system.

The Power of Peer-to-Peer Fundraising

In the world of philanthropy, the most important element is connection. People give to people. Statistics show that a personal recommendation or a message from a trusted friend is often the primary spark that inspires someone to donate.

Peer-to-peer fundraising transforms our volunteers, donors, and advocates into true ambassadors. By tapping into your unique circles of influence, you help us amplify our reach far beyond what our organization could ever achieve alone. This grassroots movement is what turns a local event into a community-wide revolution of care.

Join Us for Our Campaign Launch Party

We want to make sure you feel confident and inspired as a team leader. That’s why we’re hosting an exclusive Launch Party in March to kick things off! We’ll provide a roadmap for success, share creative fundraising ideas, and offer plenty of encouragement to ensure your experience is both simple and deeply rewarding.

If you’re ready to step up as a team captain or simply want to learn more about how it works, please reach out to Julia Boal at Julia@casaconnects.org

We’ve Got Your Back Every Step of the Way

Leading a team doesn't have to be daunting. We are committed to providing you with all the tools and resources you need to succeed, including:

  • Plug-and-Play Content: Ready-to-use social media posts, graphics, and email templates to make sharing easy.
  • Technical Support: Hands-on assistance to help you set up and manage your fundraising page.
  • Milestone Motivation: We’ll host friendly challenges and highlight key milestones to keep the momentum going and the energy high.
  • Team Celebration: We will shine a spotlight on our teams, celebrating the incredible impact your hard work is making in the community.

The data is clear: teams can amplify individual donations by up to 500%. Whether your team raises $100 or $5,000, every single dollar directly translates into high-quality programming and advocacy for the children who need us most.

Big Day of Giving is more than just a 24-hour event; it’s a testament to what we can achieve when we work together. We are so excited to build this campaign alongside you and invite our community to be part of something truly life-changing. Let’s make this our biggest year yet!

What We Do

Every program is built on one belief: connection changes lives.

CASA - Become a Voice for a Child in Crisis

At CASA of Placer, Yuba, and Sutter, our Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) stand up for children who have experienced abuse, neglect, abandonment, or are at risk of entering the foster care system. These youth often face instability and uncertainty, and without a dedicated advocate, they can become lost in the Juvenile Dependency or Delinquency Court systems.

Be Bold - A Pathway to Courage, Connection, and Growth

Be Bold empowers youth to make safer, healthier decisions through consistent mentorship, connection, and support. We pair each young person with a trained Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)—a caring, trusted adult who becomes a mentor, advocate, and steady presence in their life.

Together, they meet weekly to develop life skills, boost confidence, and promote growth. Every other month, youth and their mentors also come together for group sessions focusing on community, resilience, and positive peer connection.

Family Services - Strengthening Families, Restoring Futures

We believe in the power of prevention—and that with the proper support, families can stay together, grow stronger, and build lasting stability for their children. Our Family Services program supports parents in crisis, as well as kinship caregivers who step in to care for children and prevent the need for foster care placement.

Through compassionate mentorship, practical guidance, and access to community-based resources, we help families build resilience, strengthen protective factors, and work toward long-term success and reunification whenever possible.

K9s 4 Kids - Comfort, Connection, and Canine Companionship

Our K9s 4 Kids therapy dogs bring comfort, calm, and smiles to children and teens who have experienced trauma. Whether it’s a wagging tail at court or a quiet cuddle during a visit, these dogs remind kids that they’re safe, seen, and loved.

CASA Store - Supporting Foster Youth and Families in Need

The CASA Store offers a wide range of items, including backpacks, school supplies, clothing, hygiene products, and toys. These items are more than just material goods—they represent hope, stability, and care. By providing these necessities, the store helps children feel prepared for school, confident in their daily lives, and supported during difficult times.

CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocates) are encouraged to visit the CASA Store to select the items most needed by the children they advocate for. Whether it’s equipping a child with everything they need for a new school year, replacing worn-out clothing, or adding a spark of joy with a special toy, the CASA Store is here to make a meaningful difference.

The impact of the CASA Store extends far beyond the items on its shelves. It provides reassurance to foster youth and families that they are not alone and that their community cares deeply about their well-being. This simple but powerful support helps restore confidence and stability for children navigating uncertain circumstances.
