Greene County Baptists

are Great Commission Baptists

Celebrating Good News

Josh Hall, Director of Missions

The old joke is that Baptists like to count the “three B’s” – baptisms, budgets and behinds in seats. While we know that the health of any given congregation cannot be measured solely by these numbers, they do provide helpful metrics of how a church is faring spiritually. Living things grow, and local churches are no different.

The good news for our association of churches is that we are seeing positive trends in these areas. As one might expect, average worship attendance and baptisms in GCBA are up sharply from the depths of the Covid pandemic. However, even beyond the “Covid rebound,” the reality is that average worship attendance and baptisms in GCBA last year were the highest they have been since 2017. Total giving, which stayed strong throughout the pandemic, is up as well. Praise God for what He is doing!

Anecdotally, as I travel around the association and visit our congregations, I sense this positive momentum. There are many exciting things happening in our churches. While we are grateful for how the Holy Spirit is moving, we celebrate both humbly and cautiously. There are questions:

Will our churches build upon this positive momentum with continued evangelistic growth? Will those who have been added to the church be effectively discipled? Will the numeric growth of our churches lead to more congregations being planted and revitalized in Greene County?

While we celebrate what God is already doing, let us also pray that this is merely the beginning of a true move of God in our place and time.

P.S. Please help us track what’s going on in our churches by completing and turning in the Annual Church Profile this summer.

Odds and Ends

June is the emphasis month for the Jim Joslin Missions Offering! This offering is used to fund some really cool missions and ministries that aren’t included in our general budget. (For a breakdown of how this year’s offering will be used, see the graphic elsewhere in this newsletter or visit our website.) Would your church consider taking up an offering or making a gift to the JJMO? Contact our office for promotional brochures, and visit our website for a brief promo video that you can use in a worship service.

The first year of the 417 Ministry Residency is coming to a close. On June 5 at 7:00 pm, we will hold a graduation ceremony at Golden Avenue Baptist Church for 18 residents who have completed the program! All friends and family of the residents are welcome to attend. If you missed enrolling in the residency this time around, our second group will begin this fall. Be on the lookout for more details in the near future.

We are super excited about this year’s summer camps for students, boys and girls at Baptist Hill! Find details elsewhere in this newsletter, or visit our website for more info. We encourage your church to let your young people know about camps and provide scholarships if needed. The Holy Spirit changes lives every year at these camps!

Finally, GCBA has just launched a strategic planning process known as “Fresh Paths Forward.” Please pray for this group of 20+ leaders as they seek God’s direction for GCBA for the coming years. We anticipate this process to take 12-18 months. A progress report will be made at the annual meeting in September.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can be a help or encouragement to your church in any way.
