The Girls Club of Los Angeles is excited to commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Month, starting September 15 and running until October 15. The celebration, which began as a week-long event in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson, was extended and signed into law by President Ronald Regan in 1988. National Hispanic Heritage acknowledges the positive influence and contributions of Latina/os in the United States over many generations.

Latinas/os have made enormous contributions to the success of this country. Their positive impacts can be felt in our legislative process, culture, economy, education, medicine, and many other areas. The diversity of our thoughts, efforts, and heritage strengthens our nation.

As the Chief Operating Officer at Girls Club of Los Angeles, I am proud to support the diversity in our staff, families, and community. Our staff provides a safe and caring place for children and families every day. Our families receive compassionate support as they navigate the receivership of resources, referrals, and other key supportive services.

Throughout National Hispanic Heritage Month, let us take the time to celebrate South LA’s multicultural communities and commemorate the histories, cultures, languages, and contributions of Latina/os in our communities.

As such, let us also reaffirm our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion for all our children, staff, and community members. GCLA strives to continue being a beacon of hope, a center of opportunity, and a perennial leader of transformative change.

Policy Roundtable for Child Care & Development Commission

Gloria J. Davis, Executive Director of The Girls Club of Los Angeles, began her appointed tenure as Commissioner Gloria J. Davis with the Policy Roundtable for Child Care & Development Commission on September 13, 2023. She was welcomed by the Board Chair, Alejandra Albarran Moses, Ph.D, the Vice Chair, Justin Blakely, and other commissioners in attendance.

The Policy Roundtable for Child Care & Development Commission is comprised of community leaders recommended by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to represent their districts. Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell appointed Commissioner Davis to represent Supervisorial District 2.

Commissioner Davis acknowledged the community leaders in the room and shared her lengthy experience in child care and early childhood education. She spoke of approaching the work through the lens of humility while maintaining a social justice framework that guides her decision-making.

Before serving on this commission, Commissioner Davis served as President of the Southern California Chapter of the National Association for the Education of Young Children and is a founding member of the Early Learning Alliance, a member-driven organization focused on issues impacting young children's education and their families.

Policy Roundtable for Child Care & Development Commission

Gloria J. Davis, Directora Ejecutiva de The Girls Club of Los Angeles, comenzó su mandato como Comisionada Gloria J. Male to Male Mentoring Program

GCLA delivered its male-to-male (M2M) mentoring workshop at the KJLH MEN'S EMPOWERMENT SUMMIT "The Manhood Plan," at Cal State Domínguez Hills on September 16, 2023. Several hundred men attended, along with distinguished black male role models, including Los Angeles Lakers Legend James Worthy, award-winning singer Stevie Wonder, and scholar Dr. Cornell West. Many notable policymakers from all levels of government also were in attendance. All attendees were welcomed to the campus by Cal State Dominguez Hills President Dr. Thomas A. Parham.

The workshop focused on the importance of mentoring for males of color and discussed how the community cultural wealth model highlights the

benefits gained from mentoring by other males of color. There are clear, measurable gains in several key areas, such as cultural wealth, navigational wealth, social wealth, etc., when males of color are mentored by other successful males of color.

The Attendees took the mentoring manhood pledge, where they committed to mentor others in their immediate family, work, or community.

“I need to help mentor younger youth whom I could use my support/help," said Brandon Green, a participant in attendance.

Overall, attendees rated the workshop as "effective" or "very effective" by those in attendance. A true indicator of success for the event is that 98% of attendees pledged to mentor other males of color.

Charles Drew University School of

Medicine and Science Interns at GCLA

GCLA welcomed its second cohort of 20 students from Charles Drew University's School of Medicine and Science this fall. Ten students are in the University's Masters in Science Nursing Program. The other ten students are earning their Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.

While at GCLA, the interns participate in health promotion by sharing health tips, taking participants' blood pressure, disseminating nutrition education, and making referrals to local health centers. Students will also engage in GCLA's Wednesdays Food Share Program, where they will bag and distribute the produce and dry goods donated through GCLA to families in the community. The program expects to serve 250-280 individuals and families directly.

"Students are excited to be part of this effort so much that they return to volunteer after their internship ends," said Michelle Vasquez, Community Outreach and Referral Specialist who works with the interns during the week.

Interns also participate in GCLA classrooms. They support teaching staff with health screenings and assessing students' developmental levels using GCLA's Ages and Stages questionnaire.

"I am excited about this partnership," said Angelique Dodd, clinical coordinator working with GCLA staff on placement.

GCLA Participates in Black Girl Joy Festival

The Girls Club of Los Angeles participated in the California Black Girl Joy Festival on August 12th at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Festival was a day full of celebration, empowerment, and sheer joy for black women and girls.

The festival was organized by the California Black Women's Collective Empowerment Institute, a group of Black women from all around California who want to elevate their voices and demonstrate their collective strength in the political process. The group often collaborates with Black Women Organized for Political Action and the California Black Women's Health Project.

The organization’s leader, Kellie Todd Griffin, a mother of two sons, told the Los Angeles Wave, “The collective's mission is to uplift the issues and voices of Black women and girls. We believed that Black females deserved a positive message to acknowledge their uniqueness. We have the chance to express to them how significant they are to us through this occasion.”

The festival's schedule featured mentorships, music, dance, an innovation institute, a social media hub, masking workshops, self-esteem workshops, self-defense classes, double-dutch, hula hoops, and various activities. The free full-day affair uplifted and adored the 300 Black junior high and high school girls who attended.

The Black Girl Joy Festival was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the California Legislative Black Caucus, the California Black Women's Think Tank, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and numerous sponsors, such as County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell.

Senator Dianne Feinstein

The Girls Club of Los Angeles joins the nation in mourning the loss of California Senator Dianne Feinstein. During every step of her public life, which began when she was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1969, she has been a trailblazer for women looking to serve in office. Her glass-ceiling-shattering career is filled with firsts, allowing other women and girls to see and know what was possible.

Senator Feinstein was a powerful voice and a reliable vote for the well-being of children and families. Senator Feinstein introduced and championed the Federal Assault Weapons ban, which became law in 1994. She supported the Affordable Care Act, The Children’s Health Insurance Program, and pushed to have tobacco regulated as a drug

Senator Feinstein dedicated the majority of her adult life to public service. She paved the roads for women and minorities who seek to serve their communities through public office. Though her body is reuniting with the earth, her spirit continues on in the lives she touched, the examples she set, and the legacy of greatness she left for others to follow.

September Food Share Highlights

The Girls Club of Los Angeles is proud of the service the Food Share Program provides the community. Every Wednesday, The Food Share Program coordinates a team of volunteers and staff to provide food, ppe, and other life-preserving items for individuals and families in need.

Working closely with their partners, Food Forward, Greater New Bethel Church, and The Peoples Project powered by LA Fed, GCLA is able to provide a balanced diet for those in need. A typical bag of groceries includes meat, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, and shelf staples.

The Girls Club Food Share program happens every Wednesday at the GCLA Headquarters located at 2057 W. Century Boulevard in Los Angeles. If you would like to Volunteer or you would like to RSVP to reserve groceries, please contact GCLA’s Community Outreach and Referral Specialist, Michelle Vasquez, by emailing mvasquez@girlsclubla.org.

Case Management Services

GCLA’s Case Management aims to provide youth with the appropriate resources and services needed to become well-rounded young people in the South LA community. When youth enter GCLA programs, they complete assessments that allow staff to understand the challenges and traumas the youth are facing or have faced in the past. With a better understanding of the gaps in youths’ lives, Case Managers are able to address a youth’s needs and connect them to an array of resources and programs.

Case management at GCLA goes beyond action plans and resource linking. Youth are connected with successful members of their communities through mentorship, opportunities to interact with other youth, workshops, and so much more. Recently, a group of summer youth workers were connected with Christopher (Chris) Beene, Vice President and Community Manager of Chase Bank. Chris spoke with the group prior to receiving their first paycheck. For many in the group, this was the first time they received a check. Chris conversed with the youth about the importance of opening a bank account, saving money, and making responsible financial decisions. Not only was Chris able to provide financial guidance, but he was also able to share his upbringing and life story, which many of the youth related to.

Having successful individuals from the community provide mentorship and share their stories, allows youth to see themselves in positive role models. As GCLA’s case management program continues to grow, more youth will gain positive relationships with adults, connect with other youth to build a sense of belonging, and connect to services such as mental health and more.

Do you have a yearning to serve the community? Are you a person who loves the feeling of heartfelt gratitude? Are you willing to take a COVID Test and work on a team to accomplish something greater than yourself? If you answered yes to these questions we would love to speak with you!

GCLA is asking for volunteers to help us Wednesday mornings with our community food distribution program. Volunteers will sort, pack, and distribute food for members of the surrounding community. Our team of staff and volunteers maintain a warm, welcoming environment to help provide a caring safety net for those who need it most.

The schedule is Wednesday Mornings from 8:30 am to 10:00 am. All volunteers will receive free masks, gloves, and COVID tests. The requirements are Proof of Covid-19 vaccination, the ability to work with a team, and taking a COVID-19 rapid test onsite. Los voluntarios clasificarán, empacarán y distribuirán alimentos para los miembros de la comunidad circundante. Nuestro equipo de personal y voluntarios mantienen un ambiente cálido y acogedor para ayudar a proporcionar una red de seguridad solidaria para quienes más lo necesitan.

El horario es los miércoles por la mañana de 8:30 am a 10:00 am. Todos los voluntarios recibirán máscaras, guantes y pruebas de COVID gratis. Los requisitos son Prueba de vacunación contra el Covid-19, capacidad para trabajar con un equipo y realizar una prueba rápida de COVID-19 en el lugar.
