SITREP
What's new? Our team continues to grow. We now have three teammates in the Triad and five in the Triangle. We hope to add a few more in the coming weeks. In the meantime, if you are a service member, Veteran, or family member in the Carolinas and need assistance, or know someone who does, we can help.
STAT OF THE WEEK The number one disability in Veterans is tinnitus and 14% of American adults have been diagnosed with the condition. According to recent studies, tinnitus is now as common as migraines and chronic pain afflicting 740 million adults worldwide. Do you need help with your VA claim or getting connected to the VA healthcare system? We can help.
ICYMI Last week was a busy one for our Charlotte area team and the community.

Our Executive Director, Blake Bourne and VP of Employment, Aaron Harper co-hosted a networking event with the Veterans of Wall Street (VoWS) and led by Victor Perez (USN) of Wells Fargo. There were representatives from Wells Fargo, Truist, Ally, Bank of America, TFX, and USAA.
Thanks to our Clinical Director Nicole French coordinating with the Governor's Institute on Substance Abuse, over 20 Veterans, advocates and community leaders learned mental health first aid. This training helps to have more effective conversations about mental health, substance abuse and recovery and further stopping Veteran suicide.
Lastly, we partnered with Mecklenburg Park and Recreation and SIE Lift at Veterans Memorial Park in Charlotte. We also had volunteers from Bank Of America and AIG who helped make the park beautiful.

Amy Dozier joined Veterans Bridge Home in August 2022. Her journey to working in the Veteran Nonprofit space is unique. After losing her husband in the war in Iraq, she and her daughter were lifted up by several organizations dedicated to military survivors. This support propelled Amy to further her education to give back to her community. Through her efforts with groups such as TAPS, Stop Soldier Suicide and The United States Veterans Corps, her passion for trauma-informed care of our nation's Veterans deepened.

As an advocate, Amy is devoted to systems-building and Post Traumatic Growth of those who've experienced struggle. As a Community Network Coordinator at Veterans Bridge Home, she hopes to bring her decade-long experience of service to better engage and resource the local military community. She understands the value of healing through connectedness and is excited to support the journey of North Carolina's service members and veterans!

Amy holds an undergraduate degree in Social Psychology, a master's degree in Public Affairs and Nonprofit Management, and is a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist. When she's not strategizing at VBH, you can find Amy at her piano, behind the lens of a camera, on an awesome trail somewhere, or making memories with her family at the beach.
EVENT HIGHLIGHT
Charlotte Veterans Lunch Our monthly Veterans lunch was a success with the chance to connect with new Veterans and community members during the lunch time of our Mental Health First Aid training. We had the honor and pleasure of interviewing and connecting with Dianna Ward, mathematician, entrepreneur and Executive Director of Charlotte Joy Rides, a bike share program within the Charlotte area.

Don't miss next month's lunch on Sept 14, 2022. Lunch is still $10, $5 if you RSVP and FREE for first timers. Bring a friend, and join us for lunch, fellowship, and an interesting guest speaker. We hope to see you there!
NEWS
The updated G.I. Bill Comparison Tool makes comparing your G.I. Bill benefits at approved schools, employers and VET TEC providers easier than ever before.

New features make it easier to compare options

The recent updates allow Veterans and their families to compare up to three schools or training institutions side-by-side. This is great for comparing tuition and benefits. Users can also view different schools, employers and training providers on a map, quickly filter between options, and more, all from a mobile device. Read more
More than a thousand soldiers will be stuck in moldy barracks for weeks as officials at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, begin "assessing locations and options" for them after last week's inspection by Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Grinston found the buildings to be unlivable.

Cheryle Rivas, a spokeswoman for the post, said that no soldiers have been moved yet, but she emphasized that the Army hopes to start within the next 30 days. Read more.
It’s not completely unheard of for military paratroopers to land, well, not where they expected, whether it be in some nearby trees or on someone’s kitchen floor. And a recent video making the rounds on social media adds one more unlikely landing to the list: Directly on someone’s second-story balcony. Read More

DNA, dental and other analyses have confirmed the identity of remains buried in Belgium as a 27-year-old World War II soldier from North Carolina who died during battle in a German forest.

The Charlotte Observer reports that officials with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency said in a news release Friday that Army Pfc. David Owens, of Green Hill in Watauga County, died while his unit battled German forces in a forest near Hürtgen, Germany. Read more.

VETERAN SERVICES
NCServes is the first state-wide network to coordinate care for Veterans and their families.
Every Veteran and every family is different.

Therefore their care must be tailored to meet their unique needs. The only way all of these needs can be met is through a networked approach.

Ask if the organization you are working with if they are a NCServes member.
COVID RESOURCES Know Your COVID-19 Community Level

COVID-19 Community Levels are a new tool to help communities decide what prevention steps to take based on the latest data. Levels can be low, medium, or high and are determined by looking at hospital beds being used, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area. Take precautions to protect yourself and others from COVID-19 based on the COVID-19 Community Level in your area.
