SITREP
What's new? It's already August folks. Hard to believe the summer is flying by so quickly, and back-to-school days are rapidly approaching. If you are looking for education support, our network of providers across the state can connect you to providers who can help with degrees and certification, early childhood education, tuition assistance, computer/technology education, education support services, and language classes. Let us know how we can help.
STAT OF THE WEEK 26 According to our stats, Cumberland County Veterans, service members, and families have requested education support more than any other county we serve. Many more of these individuals are getting assistance directly from colleges and universities in the area. If you are a Veteran looking for education support, or are using your GI Bill education benefit and need other support, reach out to us here.
ICYMI In 2019, nine-year old Annaliese Miller, and her father Jake, created the Lemon Aid Stand to ensure Veterans received the housing support they need. The Millers are not a military family, they have no personal military service, but like so many others in this region, they care about Veterans and their families. Last month Jake died unexpectedly due to a runaway infection devastating their family and friends.

In the face of her family's tragedy, Annaliese and her mother decided they would honor Jake by raising money to give to VBH in his memory. So last Monday they came to the office to present a $20,000(!) check to support our work and meet our team. There were some tears shed all around during their visit, but we know Jake would be proud of the amazing daughter he helped raise.

Lt. Col. Michael Krueger, U.S. Air Force, retired served on active duty for 21 years before retiring and moving back home to the Charlotte area. A graduate of both UNC Charlotte and Auburn, Michael is now a realtor with Helen Adams.

But more importantly to this community, Michael is a master networker and tremendous advocate for Veterans in this area. He embodies how Veterans volunteer and give back to their communities. Michael served on the Harris YMCA Board of Managers, he was an active leader in the Cub and Boy Scouts, and he is a Squadron Commander in the Civil Air Patrol.

If you have attended a Veterans event in the Charlotte area, you have probably met Michael. He has been a VBH Captain (super volunteer) since we started the program in 2019. In this capacity, he leads the Ballantyne Breakfast every first Wednesday of the month. Thanks for your continued leadership Michael!
EVENT HIGHLIGHT
Ballantyne Breakfast | Wednesday, August 3 | 7:30 - 8:30 AM | Another Broken Egg Cafe (11324 N. Community House Road, Charlotte, NC 28277)
This South Charlotte breakfast is a great networking event. The typical crowd ranges from between 6-20 people. For first-time attendees, breakfast is FREE, everyone else pays their own way. As a special bonus, Aaron Harper has issued a standing challenge that he can drink more coffee than anyone in attendance. We hope to see you there.

There are one million military spouses keeping the home fires burning for American service members, as of 2020. While each has their own stories and struggles, many of them will experience similar hardships. Frequent relocations and deployments not only mean time away from their loved one, but also limit the spouse's employment opportunities.

With the military member unable to take care of their children full-time and the cost of child care going up around the country, military spouses -- when they find stable employment -- are often left to choose between the job and their kids.
It was supposed to be the perfect getaway.

The six-day trip to Jacó, Costa Rica was advertised to U.S. military veteran couples and their significant others as a tranquil, rejuvenating escape from the everyday. The website for the July 2022 couples retreat advertised a “luxury vacation” set “in the rainforest overlooking the Pacific Ocean,” complete with “exotic fruit mimosas” and “a freshly-cooked meal” three times a day. By 11 p.m. Friday, all the senators who had roamed the halls of Congress this week were gone from Capitol Hill.

But the veterans weren’t.

A contingent of about 15 veterans — most of whom had spent the prior 48 hours meeting with lawmakers to discuss new toxic exposure legislation — were camped out on the Senate steps even as rain began to come down steadily. More were expected to arrive after midnight. Read more.

VETERAN SERVICES
NCServes is the first state-wide network to coordinate care for Veterans and their families.
Every Veteran and every family is different.

Therefore their care must be tailored to meet their unique needs. The only way all of these needs can be met is through a networked approach.

Ask if the organization you are working with if they are a NCServes member.
COVID RESOURCES Know Your COVID-19 Community Level

COVID-19 Community Levels are a new tool to help communities decide what prevention steps to take based on the latest data. Levels can be low, medium, or high and are determined by looking at hospital beds being used, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area. Take precautions to protect yourself and others from COVID-19 based on the COVID-19 Community Level in your area.
