South Carolina Bridges Update

South Carolina has an aging bridge inventory. Out of the 8,400 bridges owned by SCDOT, over 2,400 of them are older than 60 years old. At our current funding and replacement rates, that number will grow to 3,900 bridges in 10 years.

Last year, the General Assembly provided SCDOT with a $200 million down payment to take immediate action in addressing some of South Carolina’s most critical bridge needs and begin addressing this challenge.

SCDOT has been moving swiftly to put these funds quickly to work, ensuring safer and more reliable infrastructure for communities across the state.

An Update on the

South Main Streetscaping Project in Columbia

SCDOT has been renovating South Main Street in downtown Columbia, focusing on improving pedestrian safety. Crews have worked to expand sidewalks, add lighting, and create parking spaces all to protect those traveling along this stretch.

The intersection at Greene Street and South Main Street is home to one of the most utilized pedestrian crossings in the state.

This streetscaping project is not just for University of South Carolina students, but the safety of everyone who lives, works, and plays in downtown Columbia.

Watch the video below for a full rundown of what crews have been working on and what they still have to do.

Toogoodoo Road CMRB Project

SCDOT recently completed a pavement improvement project on Toogoodoo Road in Charleston County. Crews repaved the roadway by using Cement Modified Recycled Base (CMRB), which is a type of road base material created by mixing recycled pavement materials, such as reclaimed asphalt or crushed concrete, with small amounts of cement. This process helps to create cost-effective and durable roadways.

Orangeburg US 601 Pedestrian Improvements Project

Safety enhancements have been made to the intersection of St. Matthews Road, Citadel Road, and Red Bank Road in Orangeburg County.

Upgrades to this intersection included mast arm signal poles and new pedestrian crosswalks to include ADA access to these crosswalks. This safety enhancement project will provide a safer commute for both pedestrians and motorists.

Day in the Life: Crew Lead

From growing up on a ranch to operating heavy equipment in a sand mine, Chris Brownlow has spent nearly 30 years mastering the art of running large machinery. Now, as Crew Lead with SCDOT’s Bamberg Maintenance, he brings that expertise to his team – ensuring efficiency, safety, and quality in every project.

Chris recently shared what a typical day looks like for his crew and how rewarding it is to make a real impact on South Carolina’s roads. Check out this video to hear his story.

Built in 1927, the Gervais Street Bridge is a historic 1,415-foot concrete arch bridge connecting West Columbia to downtown across the Congaree River.

Once the widest roadway in South Carolina, it is now a Columbia icon and a national landmark after being added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Nearly a century after its construction, it remains a vital transportation gateway, artistic inspiration, and symbol of the city's growth.

Safety Spotlight: Spring Spruce Up

On March 27th, SCDOT will be cleaning up litter on the sides of roads throughout the state. Watch this video to learn about what to expect and how you can help keep our crews safe.

SCDOT is hitting the roads with a "Pothole Blitz," a statewide effort to tackle potholes and make travel safer for everyone. Over the next several weeks, our dedicated maintenance crews will be working extended hours to fill and repair potholes across the state.

The fastest way to get potholes fixed is by reporting them. If you see a pothole, don’t just drive over it – report it! You can submit pothole locations easily by visiting our website or calling the SCDOT Pothole Hotline at 1-855-GO-SCDOT (855-467-2368).
