The Cost of Repair

by Father Casey

Last week was the 60th anniversary of the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham. In September 1963, in the wake of serious gains made by the Civil Rights Movement, the KKK plotted a deadly act of racialized terror. In their typically cowardly way, they planted a bomb beneath a church, which exploded just as a group of little girls were getting ready for a service. Faithful Departed

Myrna Taylor

We mourn the death of Myrna Taylor, a longtime member of Transfiguration who had moved to be closer to family some years ago. Myrna served as our Parish Nurse for many years, taught Sunday School, and was a longtime member of the Merry Mags. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 7 at 2:00pm.

Rest eternal grant to her, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her.

This Weekend

Sunday School is in Session

One of our goals at Transfiguration is to connect everyone with an excellent way to serve God here. We created Small Bites: hundreds of ways to try ministries at the Fig and exercise your spiritual gifts. We hope you will take two small bites between now and November. Who knows, you may find a ministry that speaks to your soul! At the very least, you’ll have some fun, meet new people, and learn more about what we do. We can’t be the beautiful, Jesus-shaped church God has asked us to be unless everyone shows up and shares their gifts.

First Informed Communion Retreat

Our First Informed Communion Retreat is designed to help children and their parents connect more deeply with the act of sharing in the Eucharist by providing guided instruction about why we do what we do in worship. At the retreat, we tell the story of the Last Supper to help the children connect our sacred meal with Jesus. Clergy teach about the service, Altar Guild members guide children around the Sacristy, and then children create their own communion chalices. Participating children will celebrate their “first informed communion” on November 5, at the 9:00am Eucharist, with a reception following in the Memorial Garden.

While we offer this experience for baptized children who are at least six years of age or older please consider their readiness. If you have a child, you would like to participate please register them by October 8th.

Special Note!

Godparents & both parents are invited but at least one must accompany the registered child on retreat. Participants are asked to bring a baptismal memento such as a photo, certificate, candle, or stole to the retreat. Childcare is available upon request.
