The Cougar Connection
The mission of Corpus Christi Catholic School is to nurture every child by providing the opportunities to grow in faith, achieve academic success, and serve others as disciples of Jesus
November 29, 2021
Dear Parents,

As we enter this Advent Season, let us remember that Advent is a time of expectant waiting, hopeful anticipation, and cheerful preparation. During this time of waiting, we always seem to have so much to do! While there are presents to buy and decorations to hang, there are even more important things to focus on. During this busy time of the year, let's remember to put our focus on the birth of Jesus and prepare our hearts for this wonderful gift of Christmas.
Sincerely,
Bible Verse
Our Bible verse focus for the upcoming month of December is John 13:35:

“By this all men will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.”

The prayer we will focus on is the Glory Be:

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Education in Virtue
We have now explored all of the virtues that fall under the Cardinal virtue of Justice. Over the next three weeks, we will review the virtues we have learned thus far. When we return to school in January, we will begin to learn about the virtues that are related to the Cardinal virtue of Prudence.
#iGiveCatholic - November 30
Corpus Christi Catholic School along with the Archdiocese of Mobile have joined with arch/dioceses throughout the country to participate in #iGiveCatholic Giving Day. We will celebrate this day of Catholic giving TOMORROW, November 30,

The cost associated with educating our students and maintaining our facilities is substantial. Tuition and fees only cover a portion of the actual cost of educating a student. Together with the assistance of the Parish, the money raised during the #iGiveCatholic campaign help will help close the gap between the actual cost to educate each child and the price associated with his or her education.

We are fiscally prudent with all of the funds we raise through direct donations and fundraising events. We focus our spending on educational enhancements, technology upgrades, and facility improvements. Our most recent investments include providing new desktop computers for all of our teachers and installing fencing around the perimeter of the school grounds.

The money raised during the #iGiveCatholic campaign will be used to support the school’s annual fund and let us purchase items on our “wishlist.”  These items will provide our teachers with innovative ways to teach and a means to enrich our learning environments.

Advanced giving is happening NOW, and it can be done by cash, check, or online at the link below. Contact Stephanie Gillis at sgillis@CCSCatholic.com for more information.
Food Pantry Thursday, December 2
We will support the Blessings in a Backpack Ministry on Thursday as we participate in Food Pantry Thursday. Students who bring an item for the food pantry may come out of uniform with their spirit shirts.

The following items are requested:
Preschool-2nd grades: canned spaghetti/pasta
3rd-5th grades: individual packs of instant grits/oatmeal
6th-8th grades: cereal or canned chicken

Thank you for your generosity in the items that were brought in to help support our parish in organizing Thanksgiving baskets.
Mass Schedule Change
Our church will celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate of Conception on Wednesday, December 8. This is a Holy Day of Obligation, therefore we will be attending Mass as a school on Wednesday of next week instead of Friday. Parents are welcome to join us, but we do ask that you continue to not sit with the students.
Spelling Bee
We will have our annual school spelling bee this Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the school gym for grades 4-8. Good luck to all of our class representatives.
First Reconciliation
Please pray for our 2nd-grade students as they will soon receive the sacrament of reconciliation. 2A students will receive this Holy Sacrament following Mass and Adoration this Friday (December 3) and 2B students will receive the sacrament next Wednesday following Mass (December 8).

Christmas Musical
We are so excited about our upcoming Christmas musical, Angel Alert! which will be on Tuesday, December 14 at 6pm and Wednesday, December 15 at 8:15am in the Banquet Hall. Our K-5 students have been rehearsing since September to share the story of Jesus’ birth from the angel's perspective. The students' attendance at both performances is necessary to ensure we have successful performances. We have chosen to have 2 performances in an effort to comfortably fit all family and friends. Please make plans to come to see our ANGELS shine at one of our shows!

Note for parents: On Tuesday, December 14 students will need to be dropped off at 5:30pm in their designated areas listed below. Students will also need to be picked up from the same location by 7pm.
  • K-2 will report to their classrooms.
  • 3-5 will report to the Adult Ed Room in the church.
Students' performance attire is blue jeans, black or white shoes (tennis shoes preferred, no heels), and the program t-shirt. T-shirts will be distributed in the coming weeks. All K-5 students will need to wear their performance attire
to school on Wednesday, December 15.

Need a last-minute gift? Our SCRIP Coordinator will be in the Atrium while you wait for the show to begin. Gift cards will be available for purchase.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Gee at jgee@ccscatholic.com.
Ms. Voncille Smith
Our wonderful crossing guard, Ms. Voncille Smith, is retiring. December 17 will be her last day. Ms. Voncille has been keeping our students safe for 16 years, while also blessing so many parents and commuters with her contagious smile and positive attitude each and every day. She will be very missed. We are planning to have an event for her before dismissal on December 16. If you have a retirement or Christmas gift for her, please leave it in the office or share it at this event. It is distracting and dangerous if you try to stop on the street to hand her something. More details will be sent home soon. Words cannot convey how much she will be missed by all of us, as I know she brightens the day of so many!

As Ms. Voncile said in an interview last year:

One day I asked the Lord what can I do to make people feel good about themselves. God said, ‘You have the gifts of a smile, a wave, and love.’ I went to the Prichard police station to ask for a job. They asked what I had to offer. I said I can make people feel happy about themselves. They hired me to be a crossing guard. I’ve been a crossing guard for 25 years. I was in Prichard for ten years and I’ve been at the Corpus Christi school for 15 years.
