CAMBA Night Out 2020
Sing Out for the Census
Pastor David Wright (center) and the New York Fellowship Mass Choir
CAMBA's Census Manager Donna Baugham Perry conceptualized and organized the first Gospel Concert at Restoration Plaza on Friday evening to Get Out The Count in Brooklyn and beyond. The evening was a resounding success with upwards of 200 socially distanced guests enjoying the music and engaging with the 2020 Census. The Gospel Chorus pictured removed their masks for the performance, and the audience was kept a safe distance from the stage, particularly in front. At the event alone, CAMBA secured 190 Census completions, with more being generated across the faith-based community, thanks to outreach, social media, and advertising efforts. Those efforts included Liz Black’s radio show on WLIB that reaches more than 1 million listeners; also, more than 1,500 engagements on Facebook. There are only 5 weeks before the Census closes, the results of which will impact our communities for the next 10 years. If you have any questions at all, or need our Census Team to reach out to clients with assistance, please send your request to censushelp@camba.org.

Thanks to Census team members Rebeca Cornejo, Karim Dimechkie, Ebone Gedeon and Lisa Gaon.
BIVO Leads Rally Against Gun Violence
On Saturday, July 25th CAMBA’s BIVO Team (Brownsville In Violence Out) organized a march and rally to stop the gun violence in Brownsville. They reached out to the community and elected officials, including Representative Yvette Clarke, Assembly Member Latrice Walker and Council Member Alicka Ampry-Samuel, Borough President Eric Adams, as well as members from the NYPD Brooklyn North. See highlights capturing the day's events from this powerful video by Program Director Hector Cuevas, and like our Facebook post.

The BIVO Team also conducted a De-escalation Workshop for the 73rd Precinct, including new Deputy Inspector Terrell Anderson, joining with community partner NYC Together, along with community youth who are most likely to be victims or perpetrators of gun violence. Together they discussed the approach and efficacy of the Cure Violence model.

The youth were given concrete skills to bring to their peer groups, elevating them into mediators if needed. The workshop demonstrated to officers the sometimes dangerous and challenging work of BIVO. The BIVO team knows this time together not only showed a united front to young people who are bearing the brunt of the violence, but brought everyone one step closer to creating the cohesive and effective partnership the BIVO team wants to have with the NYPD.
