How much time do you have left in your life?
Oliver Burkeman’s book Four Thousand Weeks explores this question by pointing out that the average human lifespan is approximately 80 years. When you multiply 80 years by 52 weeks, you get roughly 4,000 weeks.
Of course, some people live much shorter lives, while others live much longer. But 4,000 weeks offers a useful estimate—and a powerful perspective.
Burkeman suggests using a countdown app to visualize our limited time. I use an app called Countdown App, which is available on the App Store. I’ve set it up in two ways.
First, I entered my 80th birthday as a target date. This allows me to see approximately how many weeks, months, or years I may have left based on the average lifespan. I understand that this approach may not be comfortable for everyone, and it should be used thoughtfully. However, recognizing that our time is finite can be motivating.
We have only so much time, and we don’t know exactly how much remains. That awareness can encourage us to pursue what matters most and spend more time with the people we love.
The second way I use the app is by entering my actual birth date. This shows me how long I’ve already been alive—down to the years, months, and days. It’s fascinating to realize that I’ve been alive for more than 700 months or roughly 3,000 weeks.
The bottom line is simple: Time is not unlimited. We have approximately 4,000 weeks in an average lifetime, and every week matters. Don’t let this idea frighten you. Let it motivate you.
Be intentional with your time, prioritize what matters most, and make sure you’re using your life in the best way possible.
