This winter, Scouts joined an Exploring Program hosted by the incredibly talented and generous professionals at Virginia Family Dentistry. Over several weeks, six Explorers completed the course, learning the basics and receiving hands-on opportunities like suturing and performing root canals on tooth blocks. Exploring is a worksite-based program for young men and women ages 14–20 that connects them with real-world career experiences through partnerships with local organizations. It helps youth explore interests, build life and leadership skills, and grow into responsible, caring adults. Our Exploring page is undergoing major updates—check in often for new opportunities!

Behavior Around Campfires

Campfires are a powerful part of the outdoor experience. They can be lively with laughter, storytelling, and fellowship. The campfire can also be a time of reflection, learning, and great peace. Safe behavior around a campfire ensures a good time can be had by all while mitigating the inherent danger of the fire. Here are some helpful reminders on behavior that can make your next campfire a positive and safe experience.

🎉 HOVC's ScoutReach Program on the Today Show

Did you catch Jenna & Friends on the Today Show on March 28th? Viewers who tuned in were in for a real treat, as special co-host (and Heart of Virginia Council Eagle Scout), Henry Hager, was joined by Andrew Fortune, our ScoutReach Executive. What followed was a wonderful spotlight on our ScoutReach program, which serves underprivileged youth in Central Virginia and rests in the capable hands of Myron Kidd, Andrew Fortune (who was on set and whose leadership was deservedly celebrated in this piece), and Bradley Carrol, Jr. Finally, Henry was surprised by surprised with a visit from his Troop 444 Scoutmaster, our very own Ian Coddington. We'd like to thank the Scouts and Parents of Troop 438, the Anna Julia Cooper School, and the Today Show for showing the powerful and positive influence of Scouting!

Closed for Good Friday & Easter

April 18th

Easter Sunday celebrates his resurrection and the hope and renewal that it brings. As we pause to reflect during this holy time, we are reminded that a Scout is Reverent—showing respect for the beliefs and traditions of others. Wishing you a peaceful and meaningful Easter weekend.

Deep Run Day Camp for Cub Scouts

June 9th–13th

Cub Scout Day Camp is often called “the camp that comes to the Scout.” Day Camp is an organized program for Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts under certified leadership, at Deep Run Park in Richmond. Cub Scout Day Camp is a unique program; it is usually the first major activity for Scouts after graduating from their previous rank. At Day Camp, Scouts begin to work toward their next rank in the Cub Scout program, and we use the same ranks to identify age groups as your “home pack.” We welcome non-Scout buddies to join in on the fun, as well!
