Brooklyn Democratic Party Responds to Appellate Division’s Rejection of Proposed Amicus Filings of Jumaane Williams, Brad Lander and George Albro

Appellate Division Rejects Two Times

Court Declines Amicus Request Based on

Misinterpretation and Misplaced Priorities

Brooklyn, NY — The Brooklyn Democratic Party acknowledges today’s action by the Appellate Division, Second Department, which declined to sign the proposed order seeking to add NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Congressional candidate Brad Lander, and County Committee Member George Albro as amici in the pending appeal. See attached order.

The Court’s decision made it very clear that this attempted intervention was not warranted. The Appellate Division has now twice rejected efforts to insert outside political actors into a matter that has nothing to do with their offices, their responsibilities, or the public interest.

This proposed amicus submission was based on a misinterpretation of Party rules and represented an effort to involve themselves in something they have no business being in. It had no relevance whatsoever to the legal questions before the Court. The Appellate Division’s refusal to sign underscores that point decisively.

At a time when Brooklyn residents are confronting urgent challenges — rising rents, hate crimes, job losses, inequitable taxes, and the ongoing needs of immigrant communities including Haitian and Venezuelan TPS holders — it is disappointing to see certain officials devote their time and political capital to filings that amount to political theater rather than service to the people.

The Brooklyn Democratic Party remains focused on transparency, modernization, and strengthening internal processes so that our County Committee can continue its work without unnecessary distractions. We encourage all leaders to prioritize the real issues affecting Brooklyn families every day.

See Attached Order.
