To Autumn - Cooler Weather, College Football, and Fed Rate Cuts?

As I type this on a 90+ degree day in Upstate SC, it seems hard to believe that fall season is nearly upon us. As autumn's crisp air settles in and the vibrant colors of fall emerge, we will be greeted by cooler temperatures as well as this weekend's much-anticipated kickoff of the college football season. This year, the excitement will be heightened by the introduction of the new 12-team playoff format, which is expected to bring increased volatility and surprises to the college football landscape. Meanwhile, with Fed rate cuts and a presidential election on the horizon, there has been uptick of volatility in the financial markets which we anticipate will continue into the fall.

We hope you enjoy this edition of the Crescent Journal and, as always, please reach out if you would like to discuss the weather, college football, rate cuts, or anything else on your mind.

Protect Your Online Information

As our lives become more digitally integrated, our data becomes more valuable.

Often, data collectors say that the vast amount of information they take in is tightly secured or anonymized before it is packaged and resold. However, MIT researchers discovered in 2018 that individuals could be identified by combining two anonymized data sets covering the same population. A 2019 series from The New York Times went further, exposing the risk to privacy on a massive scale if a major tech firm’s anonymized location data was stolen and cross-referenced to publicly available property records.

As long as consumers’ concerns about privacy remain limited, there is little incentive for companies to cull their data collecting habits. When buying a new smart device such as a phone, tablet or computer or using a new service, look into its commitment to privacy. The market for such devices is growing, but at the moment they tend to be on the premium side of the product spectrum. Expect that to change as this topic gains traction.

In the meantime, here are some best practices to help minimize the amount of your information that data collectors can access.

Spotlight on Small Business: Upstate Growers

When Bee Bee’s restaurant closed earlier this year, there were some questions as to what might move into the space on Laurens Road.

As it turns out, this fall Greenville will get a second location of Fountain Inn-based Upstate Grower’s Market.

Platt Moore owns the local butcher shop and produce market. He also owns AM/PM Cattle Co. and is managing partner of Tomahawk Processing.

Moore grew up on a farm and spent the first 35 years of his career in the environmental and recycling business. When the time came, he realized he was not very good at being retired.

So he did what anyone raised on a farm would do...
