Vinyl Crossing

A Native Hill: our first vinyl!
After 32 albums, our first LP.

Just when we’d decided to forgo physical CDs for future releases,
we’re going retro,
re-releasing a favorite album...on vinyl!
No skimping on our first: it’s double LP set –
truly Long Playing!
Strangely, retro feels gloriously now!

We’d forgotten what it feels like to hold a big beautiful album in its cover, to remove the shrink wrap, take out the disc, feel the weight of the record, see the grooves where the sound lies, ponder the ingenious process of a soundwave becoming an electrical signal becoming a cut in a disc which meets a stylus and is reconverted from electrical signal to a soundwave.
Humans are amazing!

We’d forgotten what a masterpiece Gavin Bryars’ A Native Hill is.
And what a brilliant amalgam of Wendell Berry’s words and Gavin’s singular musical language, honed to capture the individual singers of The Crossing.
These humans are particularly amazing.

And, we’d forgotten how much we love to sing Gavin’s magnum opus, how if fits us in sound, color, texture, and its devotion to the preservation of the natural world through living in harmony with our environment. We’d forgotten how our tenor Steven Bradshaw’s art (now blown up and even more striking) captures all that in simple strokes: a dog, a shoe, a leaf.

We have not forgotten that generous people make things like this happen.
This first LP was made possible through our audiophile board member Andrew Quint’s tireless, successful campaign to assemble a group of audio experts to support its production.

The A Native Hill vinyl project is made possible through gifts from:

And we have not forgotten this thank-you: like all our albums, the original recording of A Native Hill was made possible through the generous support of Carol Westfall.
