This is From the Archives, where we present something from our extensive collection of archival photos, records and all manner of materials dating back to when the church was First Methodist Episcopal, to First Methodist, to Church of the Savior, to St. Paul's to Crossroads.
This week's archives item highlights a truth about groups (especially of children) and photographs, namely that it is virtually impossible to get a group of children or adults to all stand still AND smile AND have their eyes open AND look at the camera all at the same time, no matter what year or century it is.
This photograph is labeled as being of "Mr French's Primary School Department Church School Class, circa 1920."
They are all standing on or around the same Cleveland Avenue staircase that we still use as part of our annual church photo today.
We must presume that that is indeed Mr French on the right, apparently standing on something, perhaps the gate in front of the little staircase below (if that gate was there at that time). There are three other adult teachers identified: Miss Jennie Spencer, Miss Ruth Owman and Mrs Eitlegeorge, though no indication is given as to which persons those names match in the photo.
It's always interesting to have photographic evidence of how much the behavior of people changes over time, and also how little it changes over time. (Click to open the image in a new window.)
