This is From the Archives, where we present something from our extensive collection of archival photos, records and all manner of materials dating back to when the church was First Methodist Episcopal, to First Methodist, to Church of the Savior, to St. Paul's to Crossroads.
We have said often in this section of the Chronicle Weekly that this week's item is "one of the oldest things we have on file." But this bulletin from 1888 - as it's evocatively called, "The Remembrancer" - truly is! This little four-page bulletin was printed when our building was only five years old!
And right on the cover it presents us with an interesting fact. The church's physical location is described as being on the corner of Tuscarawas and Poplar streets. So in 1888 what we now call Cleveland Avenue was Poplar Street (or Avenue?), apparently.
The third page gives us an order for a Tuesday evening event called a "Lyceum Programme," which is described on the back cover as being nonsectarian and having "an unselfish origin in the wants of the community with a broad and generous purpose to help all people without regard to sect or creed." Among the topics discussed at this Tuesday evening program - "surgical emergencies." (Hopefully without live demonstrations.)
But it is interesting that, even in 1888, and in a brand-new building, members of this church were thinking about how to connect to and welcome into the building the larger Canton community.
Also on the third page, there was a series of Sunday evening sermons about, among other topics, "young women," with the focus ranging from the "health and beauty" of young women to young women "of power." "How much should they know" is a sermon title that really jumps off the page, and must have been an interesting subject for the male pastor to talk about.
And finally, the church really needs to bring back into use a hymn listed on the first page, "Mid Scenes Of Confusion and Creature Complaints." With a title like that, the rest of the text must have been something! (Click the image to open a PDF in a new window.)
