In Remembrance

We are saddened to announce the death of Joanne Spees, who passed away at the end of June. The Spees family has been associated with this church for decades (see the Archives section below), and our prayers and condolences are extended to the entire extended family.

We will host a memorial service for Joanne on Saturday, October 24 at 11:00 am, with a reception to follow.

If you were in church on Sunday, July 5, you heard Jane Fleischer's and Stephanie Bradford's reports about their feelings and experiences around this year's Conference and Conference in general.

But to see a special video of the kinds of things that took place there, and to read a thorough telling of what all of the participants experienced this year, please visit this page:

How Can I Help?
What Can I Do?

We need people - MAYBE EVEN YOU -

to fill key volunteer roles!

None of these tasks are difficult

and they don't take up much time,

but they are very important in the life of your church

If you've been thinking about

wanting to do more for your church,

here are some ways you could do just that!

Make music this summer
If you play an instrument or sing,
you can do so during one of our summer worship services!

Please contact Beth Polen

Join our A/V team
If you are already in church on Sunday morning,
why not volunteer one Sunday a month
to help run our audio and visual equipment?
It's not difficult, no experience or technical knowledge is necessary,
and you will be trained on the job!

Please contact Pastor Mary Jo if you are interested

Be a part of Lilly's office squad
We need just
four people to give one or two hours a day,
Tuesdays through Fridays,
to help our amazing Administrator Lilly Brunoni
manage our office and building

Contact Lilly today to sign up!

Become a Sunday caretaker
We need people every Sunday to stay after church
and make sure all of the lights are turned off

and the building is secure

You will also have to stay through
the Sunday afternoon meal in Wesley Hall, usually until about 2 pm

Please contact Ron Leonard
if you can do this even one Sunday a month,

or even one Sunday every two months!

Flowers

We are grateful to
David Boettler for his donation of these beautiful flowers on the north side of our building facing Tuscarawas. If you haven't seen them, be sure and look at them on Sunday! They help present a beautiful face of our church to all of the passers-by.

This is From the Archives, where we present something from our extensive collection of archival photos, records and all manner of materials dating back to when the church was First Methodist Episcopal, to First Methodist, to Church of the Savior, to St. Paul's to Crossroads.

The unofficial Chronicle Weekly theme this week is signs, flowers and the general care of the north face of our building - as well as family, life and death.

Thanks to a recent generous donation, we have some beautiful flowers that everyone walking and driving by on Tusc can see. This side of the building has almost always had a sign and/or flowers that have been changed and maintained by countless church members and staff, probably going all the way back to 1883.

Today's archives pictures come from two different eras, showing how different and also how similar such signs and flowers have been.

The first picture was taken February 5, 1967, the day of a youth service (when the church was First Methodist Church). You can see that, it being February, the flowers under the sign are instead greens appropriate for winter. You can also see that Debbie Spees was mentioned, presumably as being one of the leaders of the youth service. Debbie (Debra) Spees was the sister of Stan Spees. Stan Spees was a longtime choir member who was featured in a recent Archives section of this newsletter helping to install our Wesley Trumpets. Stan was eventually married to Joanne, whose memorial service this church will host in October. Debra, Stan and Joanne, who all spent much of their decades of life within the walls of our building, are all now members of the choir eternal.

The second picture is of the same part of the church, with the same sign showing a different church name, being tended to by Royal Odell, another venerable member for decades. There is no date for this Repository picture, but we can assume that it was taken sometime in this century before the merger of Church of the Savior and St Paul's to form Crossroads. We can also guess it was probably taken on a Fall day due to the leaves on the ground and Royal wearing a coat and hat. Royal entered life eternal in 2021 at the age of 92.

As beautiful as our building's windows, signs, flowers, and stone edifice may be, there is nothing more beautiful than the congregation within the building. A congregation is defined by families, friendships and service and dedication to the church and to each other. When we worship in the present every Sunday at 10 am, we continue that dedication of all of those families and friends who came before us into the future.
