This is From the Archives, where we present something from our extensive collection of archival photos, records and all manner of materials dating back to when the church was First Methodist Episcopal, to First Methodist, to Church of the Savior, to St. Paul's to Crossroads.
This is a rare situation where we need to issue a correction and re-run a photo we just showed you last week - to tell you what it actually is, what your editor got wrong about it, and how remarkable it truly is.
In last week's Chronicle Weekly, we talked about installing the Wesley Trumpets in the rear of the sanctuary in 1979, and this photo was used to show what the church looked like before that set of organ pipes was installed. This photo was part of a group of photos that were labeled by Virginia Gingrich as being taken between 1965 and 1975. And while other photos in that collection appear to be from that time frame, upon closer inspection of this remarkable photo, it was obviously taken much earlier than that.
Here's why.
After looking at it more closely, it is clear in this picture that, not only are there no Wesley Trumpets, there are in fact no organ pipes yet installed inside the Antiphonal chamber at all! This is the only photograph your editor has accidentally stumbled upon so far of the Aeolian-Skinner organ actually being installed.
As you know from our past pictures and discussions, the entire Chancel was reworked in 1949/1950, with the old organ being torn out and the new organ being put in. In addition to that, new choir stalls and an entirely new floor were added. Yet, remarkably, so far your Chronicle editor has not found even one picture of any of that destruction/construction that took place. Not one!
Perhaps those photos are in a yet-to-be discovered box somewhere.
So this is the only picture we have (as of yet) of the new Aeolian-Skinner organ being installed, and it is only of the Antiphonal division. Still, it's better than nothing!
This is probably sometime in the first half of 1950, as the Chancel is in its completed state already. One can also glean the truth about this photo's timeframe by the microphones on the Pulpit and Lectern and the original carpeting everywhere.
Next week, we will show you some amazing color photos of the outside of our building like most of you have never seen it! Stay tuned for that.
