Dear Crusaders Alumni,
Happy Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord!
As I settle into my new role at Bishop Canevin, I am able to appreciate the theology of the Transfiguration in a way I haven’t before. I love this feast because it reminds me that God's work is so often an invitation to change the way we see.
Peter, James, and John climb the mountain with Jesus as they had so many times before. Jesus is the same Jesus they have walked beside, eaten with, and listened to. Then, for one extraordinary moment, they are given the grace to see Him as He truly is. The veil is pulled back and He radiates with glory. The difference is not that He became someone else; it is that who He had always been is revealed.
This truth convicts me about the work our staff has been doing as we prepare for another school year at Bishop Canevin.
People have asked about our renewed commitment to the Franciscan charism and what that means for our school. While there are certainly new initiatives and opportunities on the horizon, I am resistant to the idea that we are becoming something different. Instead, I think we are learning to see more clearly what has always been at the heart of Bishop Canevin.
The founders of BC entrusted this school with a distinctly Franciscan vision of education- one that recognizes the dignity of every person and sees Christ not only in the chapel, but in the classroom, on the field or stage, in acts of service, and in one another. That identity has always been part of the story. Our work today is simply to bring it into sharper focus so that every student who walks our halls encounters a Christ-centered fellowship intentionally formed by the Gospel.
As I begin this new chapter at Bishop Canevin, I am anchored by the Father's words on the mountain: "Listen to him." My role is not simply to plan retreats or coordinate liturgies, but to help foster a community where listening for the voice of Christ becomes part of the rhythm of everyday life. It is a privilege to share that work with you.
I look forward to introducing myself more fully and sharing the stories of God's faithfulness here with you throughout the year.
