MARCH 2026

Bishop Canevin welcomed Bishop Mark A. Eckman into our school for all-school Mass during Lent!

Bishop Eckman expressed his gratitude for the invitation to our school. As is the tradition of the bishop, he offered the school a "free day off," meaning that this day will not need to be made up. What we did not know was that his personal tradition is to add a second free day off if a student personally thanks him for the day off.

As you would guess, quite a few of our students did thank him personally! As a result, we are very happy to announce that Easter break will be extended to both Easter Tuesday and Wednesday.

We will leave for break starting April 2, Holy Thursday, and we will return to school on Easter Thursday, April 9.

CAMPUS RENOVATIONS

Visitors to Bishop Canevin High School will notice a completely updated concrete walkway as they arrive on campus!

This newly improved entrance creates a safer, more welcoming path for students, families, alumni, and guests. Designed with both durability and appearance in mind, the refreshed walkway enhances the front of the school while ensuring it will stand strong for years to come.

This project reflects our continued commitment to maintaining a campus that mirrors the pride we have in our community and traditions. The updated entrance is just one of several improvements planned in the near future as we continue working to keep Bishop Canevin looking inviting, safe, and beautiful for everyone who walks through our doors.

A CRUSADE FOR EXCELLENCE

In honor of our school's founding year, this unforgettable evening will take place on 5/9/2026

Thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate our distinguished alumni, athletes, supporters, and educators.

The stories shared throughout this process were truly inspiring. Our selection panel faced the incredibly difficult task of narrowing an outstanding group of nominees down to just a few members of the 2026 class.

The Crusader stories we heard remind us why this tradition matters. We celebrate these individuals not only for their achievements, but for the example they set. Their journeys inspire our current Crusaders to carry forward the lessons learned at Canevin and to use their gifts to make the world a better place and to spread the glory of God.

This year, we are proud to introduce a new distinction: the recognition of Canevin Legacy Families. Throughout our history, certain families have sent an extraordinary number of parents, siblings, and cousins through these halls. Each has played a meaningful role in strengthening the foundation of our school and enriching our community.

It is our honor to recognize the first two families to receive this distinction: the Wandrisco and Havko families. Represented by Crusader graduates from the earliest years of our school through the 1990s, these families made lasting contributions across many activities at Canevin. They are especially notable for their role in establishing and strengthening the dominant wrestling programs of the 1960s and 1970s.

We look forward to celebrating the Wandrisco and Havko families as a unified community at the Blue and Silver Ball!

Without further ado, here they are, the Ring of Honor, Class of 2026.

CANEVIN'S CELEBRATIONS

The Bishop Canevin High School Alumni Office truly relies on you to help us stay connected and informed, and we are so grateful when you do. We were especially proud to hear from several Crusader alumni who are also alumni of Duquesne University, sharing a recent Duquesne publication highlighting the extraordinary generosity of Celeste (Bahl) Nasuti ’70 and her husband Jim and their remarkable contribution to our city.

Celeste’s selfless gift to science and to humanity is a powerful reflection of the values we hold dear as Crusaders. It is an achievement that deserves to be celebrated by our entire community. Celeste and family, we are deeply proud of you…proud of the lives you are changing and proud to call you one of our own.

Please know that the Nasuti College of Osteopathic Medicine of Duquesne University will remain in our prayers as it carries forward this inspiring mission.

My Favorite Sweet Shoppe owner Nina (Midgley) Kelman ‘07 was serving up chocolate covered strawberry bouquets on Talk Pittsburgh. Check out her segment!

Our very own BC Office Administrator/Data Coordinator Heather (Greider) Huang ‘06 will be joining George Mason University Religious Studies students as a guest attendee on their trip to Poland next week.

Heather's group will be exploring religious responses to the Holocaust and it's aftermath. Her group will ask students to think more broadly about questions of justice, peace, and ethical responsibility in the context of other genocides and in the context of everyday conflicts in their own communities. Her incredible trip includes visiting historical Holocaust sites in Warsaw, Lublin, and Kraków.

We are so proud of you, Ms. Heather, and can’t wait to learn from your experiences when you get back!

Congratulations to Bob and Sherry Jacoby who recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Feb. 11.

Your beautiful marriage is a true inspiration to all Crusaders!

HAPPENING NOW AT CANEVIN

Jesse Stechly '17 credits Bishop Canevin with giving him the opportunity to explore a wide range of interests - from music and athletics to science and technology, which made him a great choice to be the speaker at our, Feb. 20, Alumni Inspire (A.I.) session.

He graduated from Robert Morris University with a degree in Cyber Forensics and Information Security. While there, he balanced coursework with full-time employment, building early professional experience in technology and customer-focused roles. He has since advanced into cloud engineering and currently works in AWS DevOps and Systems Engineering, supporting enterprise infrastructure across multiple regions.

Jesse founded Skypoint Solutions, a Pittsburgh-based media company specializing in photography and videography. He remains an active member of the Canevin community, assisting the Marching Crusaders percussion section and supporting the school's growing music initiatives.

Sophomore Emerson Witter knew he always wanted to work with animals, so becoming a Zoo Teen Intern this past summer was the first step.

His duties included assisting with the care of small animals, exhibit guiding, animal presentations, assisting with Zoo Camp programs, and guest relations.

Once he finishes being in the spring musical, he intends to volunteer more hours as school winds down and summer begins. His favorite part of the zoo is the rhinoceros enclosure.

Although he's undecided as to a future career, he has been thinking about becoming a zoologist, an environmental engineer, or a computer engineer!

STUDENTS TO ATTEND EMPOWER HER SUMMIT ON MARCH 6

Eleven Canevin students will be attending the Empower Her Summit on March 6 at Duquesne University, presented by PPG Industries, Junior Achievement of Western Pennsylvania and several other local corporations and businesses.

Those attending are freshman Taleah Carroll, sophomores Toryana Brown, Cate Hites and Brionna Smith, juniors Deaira Johnson, Nyeema Norwood, Aubrey Sudor and Lilian Ulrich, and seniors Rowan Creely, Seana Fornauf and Shelby Steverson.

The summit is an engaging leadership and life development workshop designed exclusively for high school girls from Western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. The event will feature interactive sessions focused on building essential career-preparation skills.

Participants will have the opportunity to connect with inspiring female leaders and engage in meaningful conversations about personal and professional success. By the end of the summit they will walk away with practical tools to confidently navigate their futures while exploring their passions, recognizing their potential, and embracing their inner power.

Sophomore Paitynn Wright Loves to Help Others

When Paitynn Wright transferred to Bishop Canevin at the beginning of her sophomore year in Fall 2025, she knew she'd fit right in because of the school's motto of "Be a Person for Others." In fact, her entire family are big volunteers making and packing food for the homeless in Pittsburgh through The Red Door and On the Line programs, collecting clothing, school supplies and donations for local families in need, and supplying gifts and meals during the holidays to families in need.

Since she was 13, Paitynn has volunteered with the Miracle League/Casey's Clubhouse, an organization where special needs athletes can play a weekly game of baseball with the help of their "buddy." The field and the baseballs are made from safe materials for the athletes. There is a 6-week Spring and Summer Session for the games. "The best part," said Paitynn, "is that everyone scores home runs and the games always end in a tie."

Paitynn was paired with Destiny because she had experience pushing wheelchairs and other handi-capable devices. Paitynn helps Destiny choose and hold a bat and swing when the coach pitches. She's in adaptive equipment which helps her stay upright as Paitynn pushes her around the bases. When they are in the outfield, she plays a version of catch with Destiny who has a huge smile when she is playing, earning her the nickname of "the happiest player in the league."

Paitynn was inspired to become a buddy because her cousin has Down Syndrome. She wanted to be a part of something that gave those with special needs an opportunity to have the same experience as others.

Swimming since she was 6 years old, Paitynn also works with South Hills Splash, a division of Pittsburgh Special Olympics which teaches athletes about competitive swimming. Each athlete is paired with an experienced swimmer who guides them in basic stroke knowledge and swim techniques. They practice every Sunday from October to March and they all participate in two season-ending swim meets. For the past two years she has worked with Megan who loves "kneeling dives."

After graduating high school, Paitynn intends to go to college and major in special education.

"I want to always help out people with disabilities because I am very passionate about this,"

she stated.
