The 25th Annual Crusader Classic was such a wonderful day, made extra special by God’s gift of gorgeous sunshine and the warm, welcoming spirit of our Crusader family.

It was a true joy to see our teachers, staff, alumni, and supporters reconnecting and laughing together off campus. We were blessed to begin our morning wrapped in prayer with Fr. Jacob, moved by Kate Denman’s beautiful rendition of the National Anthem, and cheered on by the vibrant energy of our Crusettes as the carts headed out.

While the outing raised vital funds for athletic uniforms, supplies for classrooms, labs and tutoring center, student activities like Homecoming and House contests, and school improvements - the real magic was in the fellowship. Seeing you show up with so much love and enthusiasm reminds our students just how deeply they are supported, inspiring them to reach higher every single day.

Congratulations to our winning team…Brendan Shaughnessy '16, Alex Shaughnessy, Jordan Alfery, and Michael Bell!

Please take a moment to enjoy the beautiful photo gallery captured in large part by student photographer Juliana Daniele '27, feel free to upload your own favorite memories to the album, and join us in counting down to next year's 26th Annual Crusader Classic!

We open our doors for prospective families with students in grades 5-11 to meet with faculty, staff, students and parents!

Please help us spread the word about the October 4 Open House if you know anyone who would be a good fit to join the Crusader family!

Alumni and former BC parents are welcome to volunteer to share their experiences with prospective Crusaders!

In Memoriam

We remember and honor our departed Canevin alumni brothers and sisters who have gone home to the Lord.

Prayer for Our Departed:

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

We also pray for comfort and peace for their families and friends who carry their memory in their hearts.

If we have missed anyone, please send information to Sara at barbischs@bishopcanevin.org or call 412-922-7400 ext 3014 so we can honor them in the next Crusader Journal.

CANEVIN'S CELEBRATIONS

Joe Zyra ‘70 named to Point Park’s Athletics Hall of Fame!

We are so proud of our very own Joe Zyra ‘70 on his induction into the Point Park University Athletics Hall of Fame! Before starring on the diamond for Point Park from 1970–1974, Zyra led BC to the 1970 Catholic League Baseball Championship and was a key member of Crusaders' undefeated 1969 State Championship basketball team.

As an All-American baseball star at Point Park, Zyra batted .350 with 13 HRs, 23 doubles, and 11 triples. He was a 3-time District 18 All-Star and a 4-time Tri-State Coaches All-Star selection. During his career, the Pioneers posted an .830 winning percentage, claimed back-to-back District 18 titles (1973–74), and reached the 1974 NAIA College World Series with an impressive 3-shutout sweep in the Area 8 Playoffs. Off the field, Zyra was a multi-time Dean’s List student, graduating in 1974 with a B.S. in Accounting.

Congratulations to Denise (Pitrone) Guarnaccio ‘70 named to Chartiers Valley’s Inaugural Hall of Fame!

Denise lives with a passion to do good, always with a spirit of joy. In true Denise fashion, she petitioned the community and challenged the board to create a soccer program at CV that continues to thrive today.

The inaugural Hall of Fame Class will be recognized during CV’s home football game on Friday, October 9, 2026. Following the first quarter, each inductee will be introduced and recognized before the Chartiers Valley community, and the Induction Banquet will then be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Nevillewood.
