Tax Bill Information and Update

Tax bills are in the mail and posted online.

The first half of taxes will be due on Monday September 15^th, 2025. 

The second half of taxes will be due on Monday March 16, 2026.

The Maine Department of Transportation will be working on the replacement of the Tuttle Road bridge over I-295 and US Route 1 starting this week. The work is scheduled to be completed by September 2027.

Current traffic will continue to use the existing bridge during the majority of the construction of the new bridge. Once the new structure and approaches are built, traffic will be switched to the new bridge at which point the old bridge will be demolished.

In addition to the bridge work, an All-Way stop at the intersection of Tuttle and Middle Roads will be implemented this fall to improve the safety of this high crash intersection. Traffic will see minimal impact until next summer when the new approach work will begin and alternating one way traffic controlled by flaggers will commence. Traffic is expected to be moved onto the new bridge late next year with the demolition of the old bridge and cleanup extending into 2027.

**UPDATE**

Starting September 8, 2025, construction on US Route 1 will cause traffic delays. Crews will be closing shoulders and temporarily shutting down lanes, with flaggers directing traffic during the lane closures.

Beginning the night of September 14, 2025, construction will shift to I-295 northbound and southbound. Crews will be implementing lane shifts, and this work will happen at night and is expected to last about a week. You can expect to see light towers on-site during this time.

Please note that these dates are approximate and may change due to weather or other unforeseen issues.

Hello! My name is Haylen Meader and I am the Tri-Town Mental Health Police liaison for Yarmouth, Falmouth, and Cumberland. As a mental health liaison, my job is to bridge the gap between mental health and law enforcement and educate the community on the available resources. This position is crucial within a police department as my job is to respond to calls with the officers, conduct follow-ups and provide service and compassion to those who are in need. As the need for mental health resources are on the rise, I can provide information to the officers and divert individuals to treatment and support services. Building trust within the community is important to me as this strengthens the relationship between law enforcement and the community.

Note from Haylen: September is National Suicide Prevention Month. According to the CDC, in 2023 over 49,000 people died by suicide. That is reported to be 1 death every 11 minutes. In 2024, the suicide rate continued to climb. Educating the public on suicide prevention saves lives and informs the public about the types of resources that are utilized. Mental health is often surrounded by shame and misunderstanding. By having conversations about suicide prevention, that reduces the stigma surrounding the topic. Encouraging early intervention could save someone's life and make them feel less alone. Remember, there is help and there is hope.  

Election News

There will be a Referendum Election on November 4, 2025. Absentee Ballots Applications are available at Town Hall or online, Online Absentee Ballot Request.

The questions November 4th will appear on the ballot as follows:

QUESTION 1: “Do you want to change Maine election laws to eliminate two days of absentee voting, prohibit requests for absentee ballots by phone or family members, end ongoing absentee voter status for seniors and people with disabilities, ban prepaid postage on absentee ballot return envelopes, limit the number of drop boxes, require voters to show certain photo ID before voting, and make other changes to our elections?”

QUESTION 2: “Do you want to allow courts to temporarily prohibit a person from having dangerous weapons if law enforcement, family, or household members show that the person poses a significant danger of causing physical injury to themselves or others?”

It is time for Annual Senior Tax Assistance Rebate Program. To be eligible for the program, you must meet all of the following qualifications:

• 70 years of age or older
• Homestead in the Town of Cumberland
• Resident of the Town of Cumberland for at least 10 years
• Combined household income does not exceed $91,000

How to Apply:

Stop by the Clerk's office. A staff member will review your application in 5 minutes or less. No appointment necessary!

What to Bring:

When you come to Cumberland Town Hall, please bring the following with you:

• Application
• A copy of your 2024 tax filing (If you do not file taxes, please bring 1099’s or other forms to document income.)
• Renters: a copy of your lease.

New in 2025! NEW! Due to new Maine legislation, the Town of Cumberland is pleased to be able to offer another tax program option for seniors – the Senior Property Tax Stabilization and Partial Deferral Program. This is a property tax relief program for qualifying seniors in Cumberland. They get to defer (or delay) paying a portion of their taxes. Are you someone experiencing feelings of grief? Our grief group offers a safe, understanding space to share and find a community of peers who truly understand. Whether mourning a loved one, adjusting to life changes, or coping with other types of grief, our group provides support, and heartfelt companionship.

Valerie Jones, MSW, LMSW, is an associate clinical professor in the School of Social Work at the University of New England.  With over fifteen years of experience, Valerie specializes in the areas of aging, life transitions, grief and loss. Additionally, she is a trained hospice volunteer and community educator for the Alzheimer’s Association. Valerie is also the owner of Continuing Journeys, a private education and consultation practice focused on grief, loss, and transition.
