Main Street Work
Work has begun on safety improvements for Main Street. These plans include pedestrian crosswalks being updated, safety lights, and paving. This will result in occasional slower traffic and possible single lane closures, through the month of August. Paving is anticipated to happen in late August. Please be aware when traveling this route or seek alternate routes when possible. We thank you for your patience and understanding, and look forward to the new safety features!

Standing Water and Summer Weather
Other communities in Maine have identified the presence of algae blooms in standing (i.e., not flowing) waterbodies that can be harmful to dogs. Although the Town of Cumberland has NOT detected these kinds of algae in any of our waters, we want residents to be aware of the potential for the algae as the rain stops and the temperatures heat up. If you see any bright green or bright green/blue algae in standing or stagnant water, keep your pets away from the water and please contact us at 207-829-2220 so we can take a sample. We will work with the Maine DEP to have the water analyzed and will post the area if we get any indications of the harmful bacteria.

From the Maine Department of Agriculture Conservation & Forestry:
Outdoor lights are highly attractive to browntail moth adults; which are active from now through the first week of August. When you leave your outdoor lights on at night, you attract these moths to your property. These moths are then congregated around a small area which makes it easier for them to successfully mate and lay eggs that will hatch a new generation of caterpillars in August. Identifying Kit and Catalog Houses
Presented by Cumberland Historical Society
July 26, 2023 @ 6:30 pm
Cumberland Fire Station Community Room (Lower Outside Entrance)
In the late 1800’s and early 1900s one could purchase the parts of a house from a catalog. The components would then be delivered to the homeowner and most often, the homeowner would put the house together themselves according to the instructions. These houses provided needed housing for working during the industrial revolution. Join Julie Ann Larry as she will give us a brief history of the development of kit homes, an overview of the various manufacturers in the early 20th century, and samples of kit and catalogue homes in the Greater Portland area. Suggested donation for non-members - $5.00 | Cumberland Historical Society members - FREE
